Gloat over my ignorance: Why am I watching a Boeing commercial?
Am I supposed to be in the market for a 787 sometime in the future? It's PR, sure, and may provide some clout over a news program as far as advertising revenue, but what's the main return of news program advertising for such firms?

1. Hypothetical question:
You run a news channel. Boeing buys tons of advertising space, in essence partially funding your station. A story critical of Boeing comes up.

Are you more or less likely to run the story?

2. Good Question....
I think commercials like that make the perception that the public has a personal connection to the firms. It makes the public feel important and provides a false transparency into the firm. Almost like the Boeing is a common commodity that anyone can get. Thats just my opinion.

7. +1
Very well put.

I've noticed this the few times I watch tv, ads for energy companies, shipping container conglomerates, etc. Clearly we're not the retail demographic.

3. OK, follow-up: why would people both rec and unrec this thread?
Dare I imagine the public perception wars for Boeing reach this far?

10. Because just as Boeing has seemingly money to burn
some people have recs and unrec's burning an electronic hole in their e-pocket.

Shit, I've spent more time on this thread than I have any other one in the past 3 days. I have no idea why.

16. Time to trade in that old junker! Get your federal rebate check. Use it to but an F-35!
Have some fun, boy! You're only credit-worthy so long in life, and those federal rebates for warplanes will only last so long.

9. Maybe they also sell the little tiny die-cast models of the 787s.
I might buy one of those.

11. it is an indirect advertisement for their stock
Although, personally if I was Boeing I wouldn't be bringing up the 787... since it is the albatross that could bring the entire company down.

12. Another example of how we, as a nation, used to be able to do really cool things
whereas now, sadly, everything is run by tiny-minded bean counters.

13. Not sure what you saw but guessing they are selling stock, not the 787 itself.
Kind of ironic considering a good piece of their future earnings are based on 787 sales.

OT: it's a beautiful airplane and I'm just sorry the vision turned out to be a production nightmare. Bad for all of us really.

I'm pretty sure they aren't trying to drum up business for aluminium.

20. Ignorance + curiosity leaves us open to suggestion.
I think it a sparkling feel-good gesture of wealth and jobs status in thank you for all the support for Boeing's military contracts. And also it is some goodwill insurance should any scandals or rip-offs hit the turbo-fan.

Would you be able to give up your deluxe jumbo-jet ride to stop the wars? Can we feel good and be complicit without our conscious cracking? Maybe just a gesture to ease the pain and confusion of life in a modern empire, because we don't really have much of a choice.

21. I think its also supposed to spur a little 'made-in-USA' patriotism
Unless of course you're a communist who prefers a French Airbus:silly:

And for the record, I DO want my own B-777 for my morning commute, but I'd have to go to flight school first...
