fundies use as a justification for outlawing such behavior as, and this one is always number one with a bullet, homosexuality is just plain false.

Sure the old testament version of God was a vindictive bastard, a supreme being that wasn't above manipulating individuals and punishing vast swaths of people just because. It was how he rode.

But it was in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah that most fundies point to as what could happen to our very way of life if we let say Gays serve in the military.

First of all, the homosexual tones are not clear at all but let's just give them that one.

But what really is the crux of the story is not the behavior in the twin cities but the evolution of the Judaic god toward compassion and away from vindictiveness.

The whole part about Abraham bargaining with God that it is not right to punish the few for the sins of the many is conveniently dropped by the fundies.

They just don't like the idea of compassion. Look at how they pretty much ignore the teachings of Jesus and persevered on Revelations.

The fundies have turned this into God punishing the many for the acts of the few.

They just don't get it. It's about the evolution of society toward tolerance.

The most important part of the story is Abraham humanizing God.

1. When you understand the word

"sin" to mean originally to err or miss the mark, then those sins being visited on future generations makes perfect sense in a practical way. They are modeled and passed on while the results are visited on others.

Effecting radical, humane and realistic change is a form of atonement for them, so to speak. Right now, the Status Quo rules with an iron hand via finances. That's missing the mark of life for sure.
