Will Ohio forfeit schools' $400 million prize?

Ohio could lose more than $400 million in federal Race to the Top funds if Gov.-elect John Kasich follows through with his plan to dump outgoing Gov. Ted Strickland's education overhaul.

Justin Hamilton, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Education, said yesterday that Ohio could lose the money which it won in competition with other states if it fails to follow the proposal it offered.

"States won Race to the Top based on the plans they submitted," Hamilton said. "If any state significantly changes the plan, it will be putting all Race to the Top funding in jeopardy."

Strickland, who lost to Kasich by 2 percentage points on Nov. 2, raised concern yesterday that the federal aid may go the way of his re-election bid in a speech before the Ohio School Board Association's annual conference in Columbus.

"I believe we put the $400million at great risk if we abandon the evidence-based model," Strickland told educators.

After his remarks, Strickland said Ohio won the federal aid based on the state's proposal to use the money to speed implementation of his education plan approved last year as part of the state's two-year budget.

Although Kasich said during the campaign that he will scrap Strickland's evidence-based model for distributing state aid to schools, a spokesman for the incoming governor said he is supportive of "concepts" included in Ohio's Race to the Top plan.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Gov.-elect John Kasich asked Gov. Ted Strickland yesterday to halt studies for a high-speed passenger-rail system, and he wants President Barack Obama to allow Ohio to use the $400 million in rail funds for roads or freight rail instead.

But federal officials say the money can't be repurposed, and Strickland, who has championed the passenger-rail project linking Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati, said he will move forward with it as long as he is in office

................

Well now, seems Gov. elect Kasich has no idea that he can't use this money for anything else per this article to the Wisconsin Gov. elect:

Feds: Wisconsin Can't Use Train Money for Roads

DANE, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin Gov.-elect Scott Walker says he remains opposed to a high-speed train line between Madison and Milwaukee and there's nothing U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood can tell him that would change his mind.

Walker said Tuesday that when he talks with LaHood he will stress that the money designated for rail projects under the federal stimulus would be better used repairing roads and bridges both in Wisconsin and around the country.

............

What you mean to tell them they can't do something? Watch them whine about Big Government! Will this wake anyone up in Ohio and Wisconsin? Time will tell!

1. You get what you elect. Thank the Lord we, in Illinois, got Quinn instead of Brady.
I partly suspect that once these Republicants get into office and actually have to get down to the business of governing, they may face pressure not to pi$$ away jobs and stimulus funds.

4. Take it from another Ohioian.....
those who voted for Kasich are too stupid to know what they have done. In the end they will blame the Dems for the problem that they created.

3. but hey, he's "fiscally conservative"
He's also planning to combat the huge budget shortfalls here by eliminating the state income tax... I guess if he rockets us to the bottom of the heap, somehow we'll all be better off.

Oy... why do I live here?
