Energy Committee Chairman Candidate Says God Promised no More Catastrophic Climate Change after Noah
Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.), who will seek the Energy and Commerce Committee chairmanship maintains that we do not have to worry about climate change because God promised in the Bible not to destroy the world again after Noah’s flood.

YouTube has the video:

[]

About half the newly elected Congressmen are climate deniers (and if past experience is any guide, about a third of them are criminals).

1. Yes, but S/He sealed that promise with a rainbow
which usually appears over Hawai'i, which as we all know is not part of 'Murka but is a province of Kenya. :sarcasm:

4. This is WHY they are so fucking dangerous
Most people would blow off the ridiculous statements in the bible, but fundamentalists like Rep. Shimkus actually believe it.

But what makes him dangerous is that he's willing to act on that belief.

That's scary as hell.

8. I just wish that a rationalist in Congress would come out and say
"the fucking Bible is fucking make believe, and you're a fucking child for believing that fucking shit and a fucking idiot to boot!"

But that probably won't happen...

9. Great point. I wonder if this could be used to bring a little ray of momentary THOUGHT into
some of these heads.

6. This is why magical thinkers should be kept the fuck out of government.
Anyone who can seriously suggest that "God said so" is an answer to scientific evidence is dangerous.

7. This is why we can't let mental children run the country.
If you haven't stopped believing in Santa Claus -- or his malevolent big brother -- you're not a grown-up yet.

18. I have never heard that the belief in Santa Claus caused anyone
to call someone immoral, hate people that were different,
to start wars, to state that anyone that did not believe in
him was going to hell.

I would think that the belief in Santa Claus causes
less hate in the world.

19. Well, I agree that belief in Santa does not cause any of those things
And for that reason, I don't think it's important to do away with such belief.

On the other hand, if adults believed in Santa and if that belief affected their decisions -- say they neglected to provide for their own children because Santa was going to bring them everything they needed -- then it would be important to set the record straight.

10. Mr. Shimkus needs to read his Scriptures again
Dad sent some freaky weather to Egypt long after Noah's boat ride. You know, frogs, locusts, bloody water, hail that turned to fire, that sort of thing.

12. There's nothing wrong with having a fifth grade understanding of the Bible
As long as you're in fifth grade. Thank you, Illinois, for putting this nincompoop in Congress. Thank you, Republicans, for thinking about putting him in charge of anything more complicated than a four-inch length of string.

20. Speaking as a Christian myself ...
the stupidity reflected in that statement is indicative of a man who does not have an adequate knowledge base (and/or intelligence) to either serve in the house or to intelligently discuss scripture.

For the sake of discussion, let's assume the truth of God's promise not to destroy the world again (by flood, that is). So?

Literally no one thinks that global climate change is going to *destroy the world*, let alone by flood. What it will do, is wreck the economies of most countries, displace millions of people, alter the maximum carry capacity of the world's food production, and generally make life miserable for most people who have to live through it.

God never promised, anywhere in the Bible, that he would step in and prevent us from *really fucking things up*. Slavery, WWII, the Inquisition (who expected that?), the Crusades - all should have taught us about the potential we have to really make a mess of things. And from a spiritual perspective, I think that is kind of the point. I think God has given us free will so we can make these choices, and bear the consequences, on our own.
