Has anyone actually posted video of this "missile" being launched?
Because from what I've heard, all there is is a contrail, which isn't the same thing as proof that it was made by a missile. Until and unless someone has actual video, or orbital tracking can confirm it was a missile, the conspiracy theories flying around here strike me as kind of silly.

1. Anyone check if Vandenberg AFB has launched anything?

Nothing 'mysterious' about that - they test missiles regularly.

11. Denials are easy to accomplish via stupidity.
Say, for instance, the Air Force tests a surface to air missile launched off a specially prepared boat, maybe to determine the feasibility of small craft launched SAMs. It's all by their books, but due to bureaucratic territorialism, the information doesn't get relayed to the Navy spokespeople on duty. Then they answer honestly, that they have no idea about it.

I still encourage some caution, because looks can be deceiving.

18. Your sarcasm and conspiracy theories aside, your eyes have very limited use.
There's a reason that criminologists prefer physical evidence over eyewitness testimony. People can see things wrong, see things that look like something else, or make mistakes recalling what they saw. A video camera is a little more reliable, but it still doesn't show anything about perspective. If you see a slow moving or hovering set of lights in the night sky, traveling silently and in a perfect triangle, a video might show you the lights, but it won't tell you that they're LED safety lights attached to a hang glider riding a thermal updraft.

23. Where do they say it's a missile?
Where do they confirm that, rather than simply commenting on people's perceptions?

There should be radar tracks of the thing, which would give a good idea of it's size, how high it got, and where it came from. Where are those?

24. And governments lie. Sometimes for good reasons - mostly not.
Usually governments lie to protect their own asses (or to further the goals of powerful interest groups), then convince themselves they are doing it to protect the public from itself.

26. speculation

China downgraded our debt today. Over the last couple months, China has become a net seller of US bonds and has initiated trade talks with Russia. Russia could supply China with all their energy needs and China could supply Russia with a cheap source of industrial power ... a potent combination.

We're in India to promote a major trade initiative, but the timing seems forced. If China's currency is cut loose from the dollar; there are estimates that the dollar could loose 60% of its value relative to the Yuan. Since nearly everything we buy is made in China, our buying power would fall dramatically and rampant inflation would ensue. India, with its cheap labor, could provide relief; but they need help developing their industrial base.

We are in the midst of a currency war and huge threats are being made.

27. China knows why we're in Afghanistan and Pakistan.....
And now they're showing that they, too, control access to vital natural resources:

China's rare earth embargo triggers price hikes

A Chinese embargo on rare earth elements is causing a dramatic spike in the price of materials, which is expected to lead to a jump in high-tech product prices before settling back down in a few years, according to report released today.

Prices will increase rapidly until "non-Chinese rare earth mines are up and running, increasing product availability and thereby decreasing prices," wrote Robert Castellano, president of The Information Network, in a research note today. (See: Pay dirt: Why rare earth metals matter to tech (FAQ).)

But for the time being, Castellano points to some alarming statistics. In semiconductor manufacturing, where rare earth materials are used as high-k dielectric films and as polishing materials in chemical mechanical polishing, prices of ceria for certain applications have increased more than 1,000 percent in the past year. Ceria is also used in the polishing of glass disks for hard disk drives, LCD panels, and high brightness LEDs.

At the rate we're printing money, emerging economies are finding it difficult to swallow. We're exporting our inflation to these economies and the price is becoming steeper every quarter. We want China to ship us cheap goodies, but in return we need a little financing. Trouble is, nobody wants to lose money on a loan so China is looking for new markets.
