Just imagine you're stuck on this cruise
with 4,000 plus other folks. I'd jump overboard. This should make my siblings have a rethink about that sisters only cruise next year.

<snip>
The aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan is rushing to the aid of the cruise ship Carnival Splendor, which remained dead in the waters off Baja California after a major fire in its engine room Monday.

Nearly 3,300 passengers and 1,170 crew members are aboard the cruise liner, which left Long Beach on Sunday for a seven-day cruise to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The 6 a.m. fire in the aft engine room knocked out all power to the 2-year-old ship, which was adrift about 173 miles southwest of San Diego.

Third Fleet officials in San Diego, at the request of local Coast Guard officials, ordered Reagan, which has been at training at sea, to travel south to help deliver the supplies, fleet officials said in a news release.

6. Well,
If there was a MAJOR FIRE aboard, perhaps they might need medical assistance, a tow line (until ocean going tugs can arrive), electrical power or other aid. Assisting a vessel in distress is kinda part of the game.

57. Went looking and the Mexican Navy
beat US based help.

They were well on the case by the time the Reagan and the USCG showed up, that included tugs. They are towing to Ensenada...

There were also NO injuries which I am sure they let the USN assets know.

As to food and water, I am almost betting the first EMRATS were brought by the Mexican Vessels.

And this story has a FUNNY aspect to it. Since the Mexicans were first on scene, technically the Reagan is to be under their command.

I know, funny, but also tradition.

69. Why wouldn't the Mexican Navy rush to the scene?
If they can commandeer the vessel and take to a Mexican harbor, imagine how much more those people will be spending after being stranded?

7. No, but to most of these people Mexican EMRATS
would be even less tasty....

I am sure there is a second reason, if there is a medical emergency. Yes I am POSITIVE Mexican choppers are also on the way, never mentioned, as well as Navy ships... (who do you think has extra fuel for those tugs?)... but if there is one, and the reagan is in range that medical bay is closer

31. All of them are luxury by definition
we paid about 1500 including air fare, per person. It took a while to save for it.

But here is where they get you. Sodas are not included, neither is coffee or alcohol. At least the sodas and the coffee, though expensive, are not insane...

They also get you in a few other things.

We had a blast might do another in another 10 years.

I pay for these things in full. It takes that long to save for that, and keep saving for retirement.

61. I posted bellow what is going on re Mexican Navy
don't expect our media to go there.

Suffice it to say they BEAT the Reagan and the USCG on scene... the tugs are Navy Tugs... yes I did a double take... and they have the evac procedures ready... done it once, so this is the second time.

I am sure to the Tourists on that vesel it was a surprise to see Mexican Navy Ships on scene first... I mean all the stereotypes... and the SPAM, I am guessing it was the EMRATS they loaded on those Navy ships before putting out to see.

As I said before, most people really will not like Mexican EMRATS until they're hungry enough.

As I told the OP bellow also technically the Reagan is very technically under the command of a Mexican JO... which is humorous, insofar as the assistance goes. This is, after all, tradition. the IC is the first on scene.

You send someone to the grocery store. She buys a shitload of Brie and Merlot. They palletize it and stick it in a C-2A Greyhound. Said airplane flies to the Reagan. Reagan crewmen put the load in sling bags and hook them to SH-60 Seahawk helicopters. The helicopters fly out to the cruise ship...and just as the heli gets over the fantail of the Carnival cruise ship, its onboard loudspeakers boom the words every person aboard was longing to hear...

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Cruises are wonderful and equalizing... no one knows how much money anyone else has...everyone is treated great.

Cruises are also quite inexpensive. 300-1500 a person depending on where you choose to sleep.

We have roomed on several decks and no matter where you sleep, the entire cruise is fantastic

1 Carnival

7 Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is by far the better cruise line.

One time, our local airport canceled our first flight to the connecting flight...

put us on a Greyhound which broke down numerous times

Bottom line, we missed the boat

RCL put us up in Miami for 2 days and flew us to Jamaica and then charted taxis to catch the boat THEN they refunded half our cruise price for all 4 of us that went. It wasn't even RCL's fault but they took care of us.

3. Being helped by an aircraft carrier: way fucking cool. It being the reagan? Total bummer.
otherwise, I wouldn't mind so much being stuck on a ship that's dead in the water - not like it's sinking, or in any real danger, and what does one do on a ship, anyway, but hang out, drink, and eat? Doesn't need to be moving for that.

I know the bathrooms weren't working for a while, but I don't know otherwise how bad the conditions were - probably stuffy in the inner staterooms, I'm sure. It might be worse than I've been imagining, but I don't know.

And I tend to be pretty damn flexible and go-with-the-flow, so probably wouldn't be too bothered by this.

Unless they cut off the booze - then I'd be fucking livid.

(by the way, the link is bad)

that would get to suck if the ship had no power. No way to cook food, no way to keep it refrigerated. No elevators to get from deck to deck.

Possibly no showers? Possibly no hot water?

stuck on a ship with 4,000 folks most of whom probably have an overblown sense of entitlement.

49. We went on a cruise in 2001
October, 2001, to be exact. We booked August 31. The cruise line in question wouldn't allow us a refund if we canceled, so we went.

>Can you imagine being confined with a bunch of irate passengers in this situation.<

We didn't have an engine fire, but there were such severe storms at sea that even the captain was ill. They had insufficient seasickness meds. There was a disruptive passenger that caused huge problems for most other people onboard. There were other things that happened that, again, don't rival an engine fire, but left the passengers on our cruise exceedingly upset and frustrated. The US bombed Afghanistan during our cruise, therefore, we weren't able to visit Kauai, the whole reason we went on the cruise in the first place. It was an awful experience.

I'm never going on a cruise again unless a) it stops every day, and b) we don't go on Norwegian Cruise Line. Carnival is not only refunding the price of everyone's cruise, they are giving the equivalent of a free cruise at a future date to everyone on board. The people currently on that ship are enduring a lot of inconvenience, but Carnival is doing their best to make up for it.

IMHO.

47. Here is the Mexican role
Los funcionarios de la Guardia Costera y de la Marina mexicana señalaron que enviaron varias aeronaves y botes guardacostas para proveer asistencia al crucero.

... http://eju.tv/2010/11/crucero-carnival-qued-varado-tras-sufrir-un-incendio-en-las-costas-de-mxico/#ixzz14ptEUyxs

Functionaries of the Mexican Coast Guard and the Mexican Navy said that they dispatched several air units and coast guard vesels to assist,

The vid also said that they beat the Reagan on the scene and they were the ones to suggest Ensenada

FYI Ensenada used and still is the home for the tuna Fishing Fleet and the largest sea port in that area, but this monster will still have to stay outside and use sea to shore small boats to get passengers off.... the draft on this monster is like large... and of course it is about an hour from the US Border, not counting the line at Otay. Having done this with CHinese ilegal aliens I am betting the bus convoy will go to Otay, and if need be ambulances will be standing by in case they are needed. Mexican Red Cross rigs, to be exact. Smells like they activated the sea borne DN-III-E and that they are probably providing EMRATS anyway. For the record the Mexican Navy did NOT have this capacity upwards of ten years ago...

52. Here is more, I was RIGHT

Tourism secretary for Baja California, Juan Tintos Funke, said that the tourists will be transfered to the US by land, in an operation where there will use at least eighty buses with support from the Federal Police, Ensenada, Rosarito and Tijuana.

They will cross to the US through Otay Mesa, neighboring San Diego

http://www.vanguardia.com.mx/marinaescoltaacruceroincendiado-586192.html

Damn I know operations too well

They are doing this slowly because ... you really cannot do this fast with tugs.

By the way, the Reagan, this is just a piece of raw data US Media will nto say, was late to the party. So technically the Captain has to place the Reagan under the command of the IC. Incident Commander, a Junior Officer of the Mexican Navy. Oh god this is FUNNY as hell! So this USA, USA< USA... is not quite what it appears!

Sorry, I just find this funny as hell.

65. My favorite vacations are those where the unexpected happens.
Provided everyone survives, of course.

My parents were masters of the vacation misadventure. No air conditioning, no food, and toilets that don't work would've been a normal thing.
