"(TX Gov) Perry calls Social Security bankrupt 'Ponzi scheme'"~~~
http://www.mysanantonio.com/entertainment/books/perry_touts_new_book_in_san_antonio_107002198.html

Perry criticized President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal and an early 20th-century “progressive era” movement that “gave the federal government access to our wallets via taxation.”

Calling the New Deal “a glut of federal programs,” Perry said the creation of the Social Security system did very little to end the Great Depression.

Will somebody not rid us of this meddlesome governor?

Who, like all "CON-servatives," does NOT address the issues that face our nation.

My spouse's family were original settlers of the land in the area that Perry is from. I recall talking to my mother-in-law, who lived there during the Great Depression. She told a story of a family pulling up to their farm, a couple and eight children (all white). The mother got out of the wagon and approached the house, asking if my mother-in-law's family had any food to share. When she was told no, but the family was welcome to camp on the land overnight, the family gathered some wood to build a fire. They drew water from the well to boil. Then the whole family dug up wild onions and boiled them, and that was dinner.

As my Democratic mother pointed out to my father, a staunch Republican who said Social Security was wrong, "You wouldn't have had a job if it wasn't for Roosevelt and the works program. You couldn't even afford a haircut for three months at a time." And that same father took good advantage of Medicare when he had triple bypass surgery at 80 years old that added ten good years to his life.

Social Security is a result of a nation who believes that old people should be taken care of and not have to suffer in their old age. In this macro culture, we generally do NOT personally see to the care of our old people because EVERYONE in a family who can works to support big business and get our few crumbs. Most hope the old people saved enough money to be tucked away in a nursing home.

The CONservatives want the working man back to digging wild onions to feed the family and who knows what they have planned for the old folks--ancestors who in other cultures are highly revered and nurtured.
