Calm down people. Don't 100% believe the first article you read!!!

Shit, this place immediately over reacts to every damn story.

Wait, think, read and think more about it before posting a "It is horrible" post within one hour of the story breaking!

Wait for Krugman, Keith, Rachel, etc to present some sides to it.

It amazes me that 50% of the DU thinks this is an easy task!!

1. This issue is one on which our party MUST speak out.
They are playing dangerous games by appointing people like Simpson and Bowles to the commission.

Obama either approves of their view or he does not. Which is it?

What does that mean.

I mean Soc. Sec. It is point of no return. Obama should never have appointed two SS privatizers to the commission.

But progressives are usually pretty good at figuring out what they think on their own without waiting to be told by others what they want us to think. You have progressives confused with some other part of the political spectrum. I think.

20. You don't have to be a troll to see what is happening here -
and it didn't begin with the midterm election. I first heard Obama talk about social security in the 2009 State of the Union Speech. So presumably this has been bounced around the DNC for quite awhile.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Remarks-of-President-Barack-Obama-Address-to-Joint-Session-of-Congress

"To preserve our long-term fiscal health, we must also address the growing costs in Medicare and Social Security. Comprehensive health care reform is the best way to strengthen Medicare for years to come. And we must also begin a conversation on how to do the same for Social Security, while creating tax-free universal savings accounts for all Americans."

OK, let’s say goodbye to the deficit commission. If you’re sincerely worried about the US fiscal future — and there’s good reason to be — you don’t propose a plan that involves large cuts in income taxes. Even if those cuts are offset by supposed elimination of tax breaks elsewhere, balancing the budget is hard enough without giving out a lot of goodies — goodies that fairly obviously, even without having the details, would go largely to the very affluent.

I mean, what’s this about? There is no — zero — evidence that income taxes at current rates are an important drag on growth.

Oh, and they’re talking about raising the retirement age, because people live longer — except that the people who really depend on Social Security, those in the bottom half of the distribution, aren’t living much longer. So you’re going to tell janitors to work until they’re 70 because lawyers are living longer than ever.

...

Update: It’s here. And it really is that bad. The idea that co-chairs of a commission whose charge is fiscal sustainability should take it upon themselves to (a) declare that federal revenue must not exceed 21 percent of GDP — that’s right, putting a cap on receipts and (b) call for reducing the top rate from 35 to 23 is just awesome.
