What the hell should I boycott THIS week?
Seems I can't even turn around and go to the john, and there's yet another call to "Boycott (fill in the blank)."

Can't shop at Wal-Mart, can't shop at Amazon, can't buy my favorite foods, etc, etc.

Boycotts have become worthless, due to far too many calls for boycotts.

I no longer heed those calls.

1. Nor I.
It all comes from the same places unless an Amish guy is carving it from a tree he chopped down himself or stitching it from a cow he bred, raised, slaughtered and skinned... etc.

Boycotting probably amuses our corporate overlords.

3. I shop wherever I want and never pay any attention to boycotts. If I decide on my
own to boycott a store or a brand for whatever reason, I don't tell others that they must boycott it too. I just see it as a personal decision not to participate in whatever the company is doing that I don't agree with. I agree that boycotts are generally worthless, but there are some isolated instances when boycotts have been successful in changing something.

5. I shop where I like and do what I feel is right and best. Sorry if you think that is ineffective.
Shop wherever you like or boycott companies that you're told to boycott. I won't judge you either way.

7. You're apparently very interested in what I do, and how I conduct myself as a consumer. I don't have
"secret" boycotts, as you characterize them. I just don't buy from companies that I may disagree with, but I won't ask you or anyone else to do the same. That's up to you and has to do with your personal finances, ethics, etc. I'm not going to tell you to stop shopping at Walmart, for example, because their prices are good, and perhaps you can't afford to go somewhere more expensive. I could give you many other examples, but you probably get the idea.

it's a democratic board. boycotts are a tool of democracy & a tool of the working class.

you & the other little "consumers" here want to brag about "ignoring" boycotts, expect to be criticized.

The banksters are presently using a capitalist boycott, capital strike, to destroy working people. I offer no apologies for my so-called rudeness.

13. I haven't written anything rude to you. We can disagree, but that's different than the way
you chimed in and attacked. I won't hound people about boycotting this or that, or try to make people feel guilty for buying something that they need or even want. I'm not AGAINST boycotts; I just don't participate in them per se. I do my best, as I'm sure everyone does. I don't think shaming people because they shop at Walmart and you oppose Walmart practices, for example, is right.

to which you responded: "I shop where I like and do what I feel is right and best. Sorry if you think that is ineffective."

yes, i feel it's ineffective, & i don't see the "attack" in saying so. no more an attack than the OP you responded in agreement to.

"sorry" if that offends you.

20. Name me ONE, just ONE boycott devised on DU that had actual teeth.
Boycotts have to be local to be effective.

21. i've never seen a boycott dreamed up on DU. i've only seen people saying
Edited on Thu Nov-11-10 01:49 AM by Hannah Bell
"we need to boycott x."

expressing the need or desire isn't a boycott.

now do you want to ask what organized boycotts have been effective? a number of which were not "local" by any definition?

22. Actually they don't have to be local. Though, I will concede that any boycott...
conceived on DU is a bust. Hell, any political activism conceived on DU is a bust. DU is comprised primarily of people who believe that voting is the ultimate of political and social activism.

DUers, like most of the rest of the United States citizens do not care where their products come from and at what expense.

Slave produced product? Don't buy it.
Community destroying monolith? Don't shop at it.
Causes mass environmental destruction? Don't eat it.

Because they are bad for MAIN STREET USA.

No boycott - it's a moral issue.

Me, I loves me some 1830s southern cotton and 1900s northern cloth milled by children.
Aah! The good ole days when I didn't have to waste my beautiful mind on human misery.
