Poll question: Which is your FAVORITE part of the Chairmen's proposal?
Edited on Wed Nov-10-10 10:43 PM by coti
I've been reading over the plan in more detail, and it just keeps getting better. What's YOUR favorite part?

It's all in here:

10. Obama will never be in a position to touch this.
It won't even make it to Congress, let alone to his desk.

13. As it stands even their own commission wouldn't pass this pile of crap.
And you'll find very few members of Congress who'd be willing to touch it with a 10 foot pole. Liberals hate it because it slashes taxes for the rich (God only knows how they think that's a deficit-reducing measure). Conservatives hate it for the one good thing included, taxing capital gains and dividends the same as regular income. Virtually everybody on both sides is backing away as fast as possible because of the sheer political toxicity of the changes to Social Security. Conservatives would like to do that, but they don't want to be on the record as voting for it, since they know without old people voting for them they're politically toast.

6. I'd like to see that part, but I have to say I'm really partial to
Edited on Wed Nov-10-10 10:51 PM by coti
people's taxes going up by $1,000 or more each because the premiums their employers pay for their insurance are so ridiculously high, but are no longer tax-exempt.

My next favorite is the other multiple-thousand dollar increase in income that will go to each middle class taxpayer with no corresponding benefit, the elimination of the mortgage interest deduction!

2. The part where they thank a Democratic president for the opportunity
To basically re-state the same proposals as they've been on the record as supporting for decades.

5. My vote went to your post .... !!! K&R .....
Though I didn't really look at it all yet so this was a surprise ....

The part where they lower the top income tax rate from 35 to 23 percent
The part where they lower the corporate tax rate from 35 to 26 percent

The right wing crooks never give up -- crime does pay!!

The left wing seems to be asleep still .... ???

:)

12. Didn't mean liberal Dems -- what's left of them .... I meant ....
the population -- liberals in general -- no one really seeming to be

getting active on this. Even the liberal organizations seem silent!

Presume because we have a Democratic president?

Who unfortunately isn't behaving like one!!

9. I like their jobs and education program...
Like the census, they're going to hire a bunch of people to go door-to-door to kick everyone in the groin and tell them about their awful plan. As you're hunched over in pain, the plan won't seem so bad by comparison (at least in the short term).

20. The part where they lower the top tax bracket to 23% BY GUTTING the Middle Class's Social Security

Simpson Bowles INCREASES reliance on the highly REGRESSIVE payroll tax.

Specifically, it steals the payroll taxes of the middle class in order to GIVE TAX RELIEF TO THE SUPER WEALTHY.

Yes, it gives a few crumbs to the very poor (paid for by the PAYROLL taxes of the middle class, taxes which EXEMPT the great majority of the income of the super-wealthy), but it does this entirely ON THE BACKS OF THE MIDDLE CLASS while giving TAX RELIEF TO THE VERY WEALTHY.

Then it slashes the Social Security benefits of middle class Americans who have paid into the system, in good faith, for 40 years and are on the verge of retirement... and who, unlike the super wealthy, need Social Security in addition to their savings to have a secure retirement.
