SANTA CRUZ -- A few hours after Vice President Joe Biden met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday, he had another important appointment. It was short, but as usual the plain-spoken politician got his point across.
Biden called Zach Davis and Kendra Baker, owners of 2-month-old The Penny Ice Creamery in Santa Cruz, to thank them for a "damn good" YouTube video they made thanking President Barack Obama and congressional officials for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that backed their small business loan. More than 13,000 people have watched the video since last month.
"So here's the deal, I'm comin' for ice cream," Biden said, telling the two he was a "genuine lover of ice cream." Biden said the YouTube video was "really well-done, and I'm glad you were able to benefit from the act."
Amid a crush of media and well-wishers, Davis replied on the shop's speakerphone, "I appreciate all the work that you've done and we're really thankful."
After the five-minute call, video clips of which were posted on the vice president's webpage within a few hours, Baker said she never dreamed the YouTube video would receive such a high-profile response.
