Alexi Giannoulias mulling run for Chicago mayor?

November 12, 2010 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- The list of potential mayoral candidates might be growing. There are reports that another candidate is considering a run for the mayor's office.

Alexi Giannoulias is said to be the latest politician to think about a mayoral bid. There are reports some aldermen would like to persuade Giannoulias to enter the race.

Several people are expected to formally announce they are candidates this weekend.

6. I think it would be an odd move

He's just stepped off a (losing) Senate race and wants to step in to a mayoral race? It sounds desperate, and I'm not sure that will fly with voters. Plus, he's still only 34 years old. It's hard to imagine the third largest city in the US, with its manifold financial, educational, and other problems at the moment, being run by a 34 year old. (Okay, flame away here folks: I'm ready to hear how I'm making an ageist argument here. But it's really about experience, too. Being mayor is not even being like a US Senator. You really do have to make the trains run on time.)

This is a truly bizarre conundrum we're in here.

In the end, I don't think Giannoulias will run for the same reason Dart didn't run: you can't be on the ballot on November 2nd and then turn around two weeks later and be running for a different office. Dart's problem was worse, because he was sure to be elected: he would have had to resign moments after being elected to a big office. Giannoulias, of course, lost. But the problem is similar.

Rahm's already the Chicago insider bar none. And he has Obama's support.

Giannoulias is just too young to stand a chance and it does look desperate that he's coming off his loss with Mark Kirk and throwing his hat into the mayoral race.

No way he wins imho.
