Conyers joins growing chorus calling for Bush torture probe

By Stephen C. Webster

Following the revelation that President George W. Bush not only approved of but emphatically supported his administration's torture program, a growing chorus of lawmakers and human rights groups has expressed outrage at the lack of investigations and prosecutions.

Torture is illegal under US and international law, including the UN Convention Against Torture and the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, which claims the US as a signatory.

3. Gee, if only there was someone with subpeona power... maybe a congressman...
...who had some kind of authority over judicial matters. :eyes:

Shorter Conyers: I want someone else to do my job.

5. Conyers is correct, and
Conyers is an asshole. He had the power to investigate. He had the RESPONSIBILITY to investigate.

What he didn't have is a damned spine.

Now, he wants to talk tough?

Go away, John.

6. Now that he's no longer in the position to actually do so.
Funny how his positions changed when he became Chair of the Judiciary Committee, and then back again when he's no longer going to be chair.

7. Conyers can kiss my muthafuckin' ass. He had his chance and all
Edited on Fri Nov-12-10 08:47 PM by Subdivisions
he could manage was a few sternly-worded letters to people who ignored Congressional subpoenas and demonstrated nothing by smug contempt for the rule of law and for the authority of Congress.

Conyers could have accomplished this:

Instead he's just a loser.

9. I can't count the number of letters that I wrote to Conyers asking for this.
All were written when the thugs had the majority, but after the Democrats gained the majority in 2006, they had the attitude of "looking forward, not back".

:grr:

10. John Conyers = Arlen Specter... comes out barking like a pitbull, then lays down and licks his dish
like a good little porch puppy. All talk, no action. He went from investigations/meetings being held in the basement while Dems were in the minority to being a lapdog for that other major disappointment Nancy Pelosi and her "impeachment is off the table" bullshit when they became the majority..

Fuck Conyers *and* Pelosi...and Harry Reid too! They are a major part of the reason we are where we are today...
