Del City (Oklahoma) High Students Say Discrimination Keeping Them From Graduation

Kelsey Hicks, 17, wants to be a firefighter after she graduates high school, but that's the biggest challenge she's facing right now. Hicks transferred to night school last month but she's ready to return to Del City High School. The principal, she said, won't allow it.

"The principal will say 'Well, you're gay. You're not going to do anything with your life. You might as well just drop out now,'" said Hicks.

The 18-year-old said she was kicked out of Del City High in August after school leaders learned she was living with her girlfriend.

Brittney MacDowell, 19, is a graduate of Del City High School. She said those are the same problems she encountered after her principal learned of sexual orientation.

"I can understand that was trying to look after me, but I asked him what he meant by 'my lifestyle,' and he said 'Well, they live an unhealthy lifestyle,'" said MacDowell.

No wonder our LGBT brothers and sisters are angry and feeling betrayed. I'm angry, too, and I don't live in their skin by a long stretch. :(

2. Once I saw Oklahoma the article suddenly made sense.

Nothing against the DU'ers from OK, I know they can't all be insane, but with 70% voting to ban Sharia law... Yeah, this isn't surprising.

ETA: Anyway, I don't think insanity is the problem. It's religious extremism.

4. And people wonder where some kids get the notion that it's okay to bully other kids.

When power is entrusted to adults like those administrators in the article, it sends a clear message that it's perfectly fine to be ignorant and mean-spirited.
