THE BUSINESS PLOT TO OVERTHROW ROOSEVELT
http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/Coup.htm

In the summer of 1933, shortly after Roosevelt's "First 100 Days," America's richest businessmen were in a panic. It was clear that Roosevelt intended to conduct a massive redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor. Roosevelt had to be stopped at all costs.
The answer was a military coup. It was to be secretly financed and organized by leading officers of the Morgan and Du Pont empires. This included some of America's richest and most famous names of the time:
Irenee Du Pont - Right-wing chemical industrialist and founder of the American Liberty League, the organization assigned to execute the plot.
Grayson Murphy - Director of Goodyear, Bethlehem Steel and a group of J.P. Morgan banks.
William Doyle - Former state commander of the American Legion and a central plotter of the coup.
John Davis - Former Democratic presidential candidate and a senior attorney for J.P. Morgan.
Al Smith - Roosevelt's bitter political foe from New York. Smith was a former governor of New York and a codirector of the American Liberty League.
John J. Raskob - A high-ranking Du Pont officer and a former chairman of the Democratic Party. In later decades, Raskob would become a "Knight of Malta," a Roman Catholic Religious Order with a high percentage of CIA spies, including CIA Directors William Casey, William Colby and John McCone.
Robert Clark - One of Wall Street's richest bankers and stockbrokers.
Gerald MacGuire - Bond salesman for Clark, and a former commander of the Connecticut American Legion. MacGuire was the key recruiter to General Butler.

What the businessmen proposed was dramatic: they wanted General Butler to deliver an ultimatum to Roosevelt. Roosevelt would pretend to become sick and incapacitated from his polio, and allow a newly created cabinet officer, a "Secretary of General Affairs," to run things in his stead. The secretary, of course, would be carrying out the orders of Wall Street. If Roosevelt refused, then General Butler would force him out with an army of 500,000 war veterans from the American Legion. But MacGuire assured Butler the cover story would work:

9. One thing to bear in mind about FDR:
Although he had been fully informed about the TREASONABLE actions of those plotters, he took NO "official notice" of it, and allowed ALL of the principals to walk. Keep that in mind whenever you hear Obama compared unfavorably to FDR on DU.

13. He died in 1945
I'm sure he wouldn't have let them walk had he lived, nor would he have expected future President's to do the same.

15. "In the summer of 1933, shortly after Roosevelt's "First 100 Days," America's richest ...."
That was in 1933, 12 years before his death in 1945. At that time, FDR had FAR more "political capital" than ANY other President could ever hope to achieve in an honest election from that time onward. And most certainly a degree of magnitude MORE than that of Obama's. But he took NO "official notice" of that flagrant TREASON, and they ALL walked!

20. One sentiment I'm happy to echo, Mr T.
A clip from the documentary 'The Corporation'. The Youtube page this links to is filled with many videos on the whole topic of the corporatocracy's earlier attempt to rule through purchased government. They've done a much stealthier job this time around I'd say. Have to hope it won't be as effective as they intend in the long run.

6. and Democrats have been going along to get along ever since
Think about the coup attempts and attacks on the Constitution that have gone unprosecuted. The elites can't win at the ballot box so they seize power through thuggery, theft and deceit. They will not stop until someone makes them feel pain.

10. Those 500,000 veterans had reason to be angry.....
Roosevelt tried to keep his campaign promise by cutting the regular federal budget, including 40% cuts to veterans' benefits and cuts in overall military spending. He removed 500,000 veterans and widows from the pension rolls and slashed benefits for the remainder. Protests erupted, led by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Roosevelt held his ground, but by 1936 angry veterans passed a huge bonus bill over his veto. He succeeded in cutting federal salaries and the military and naval budgets. He reduced spending on research and education.

Read more about FDR and his efforts to cut the budget and pleasing conservative members of congress.

18. You got that right!
Edited on Sat Nov-13-10 03:11 PM by pnorman
"Fiscal Conservatism" was always a large part of FDR's make up. After the firestorm over his so-called "court-packing" in 1938 from his "Blue Dogs" ("Southern Democrats", most of them loathsome RACISTS), he panicked and went into "cost-cutting" mode. That hardly mollified his enemies, both within and outside the Democratic party, but it brought most of his New Deal programs to a screeching halt and brought on the so-called "Roosevelt Depression". "War Keynesianism" soon restored the economy and we won WW2, but it also signaled the end of New Deal idealism!

11. American Liberty League - same as ole Sewell Avery - Mont. Ward CEO
that FDR literally had hauled out of his office for not complying with war production.

http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/fdr-seizes-control-of-montgomery-ward

Michael Moore talked about this and had his picture on Bill Maher last night.

Wiki lists him as a "financier" of the American Liberty League.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sewell_Avery

So, was ole Sewell one of the plotters???

12. American Liberty League=precurser to the Tea Party

History repeats itself?

By Eliot J. Chandler

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” — Santayana, 1924.

Today’s Great Recession is a repeat of the 1930s’ Great Depression in so many ways. Today’s Tea Party is a repeat of the 1930s’ American Liberty League. The Tea Party is attempting to foist the myth that it’s a spontaneous grassroots movement, and not orchestrated by a power structure similar to the 1930s American Liberty League, which was funded surreptitiously by the Du Pont family and numerous corporations such as General Motors, Standard Oil, Heinz Foods, Colgate and Goodyear.

Today’s Tea Party is quietly funded and controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp, Roger Ailes’ Fox News, Fred and David Koch’s Koch Industries, Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and others.

The Tea Party’s followers, in becoming tools of the corporate interests, are deceiving themselves into protesting against their very own self-interests and are, in effect, supporting those many large corporations that are riding roughshod over the middle class.

16. American Liberty League=US Chamber of Commerce
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/saul-friedman/a-lesson-for-now-from-193_b_764677.html

"It was in August of 1934, for example, that a group of hardcore conservative Democrats and Republicans -- financed by some of the most prominent names in American business-formed 'The American Liberty League,' an anti-government, pro-market organization that accused FDR of leading the country down the path of a socialist dictatorship." Among the League's backers were the DuPont family, and the leaders of General Motors, General Foods, Chase National Bank and Standard Oil.

The League will sound familiar for, as Woolner wrote, "it attacked nearly every New Deal measure under the guise of its goals 'to defend and uphold the Constitution...to teach the duty of government to protect individual and group initiative and enterprise, to foster the right to work, earn, save and acquire property..."

"In hundreds of published pamphlets, the League sent mixed or contradictory messages, variously accusing the New Deal of being inspired by fascism, socialism or communism. And the president's leadership of being so strong that it was tantamount to the establishment of a dictatorship, or so weak that he rendered himself unable to ward off the sinister influences of his socialist advisers. The league saw economic planning and regulation as a threat to American values, the growth of the national debt as a sign of permanent decline."

But Roosevelt's fireside radio chats, his magical voice and his optimism cut through the incessant criticism from virtually every newspaper, help in part by a rebound in economic growth and the stock market. Besides, Roosevelt held informal press conferences in the Oval Office every Monday morning, beginning with the president asking, "What's on your mind, boys?" He had the reporters on his side, if not their publishers. And it was his way of keeping in touch with the public.

(snip)

Woolner writes that Roosevelt took on the League, using his friends in the press to expose its ties to the business elite and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, one of Obama's arch critics today. And Roosevelt, from one of America's most aristocratic families, never hid his disdain for the corporate captains, whom he derided as "economic royalists."
