I've made no secret of my support for Nancy Pelosi, her "off the table" MASSIVE ERROR from 2006 notwithstanding. Ms. Henneberger writes about support for Pelosi here.
Why Obama Should Speak Up for Nancy Pelosi
6 days ago
President Obama has been so busy in India – drumming up business, admiring Gandhi, dancing with schoolchildren – that he hasn't had time to utter a word in support of ... what was her name again?
In fact, even when asked about her – you know whom I mean, comes from California, passed his entire agenda -- White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters en route to Asia on Air Force One that the White House "does not comment or get involved in leadership elections. But as the president has said before, he appreciates the work of the speaker and the entire House Democratic leadership team, who have been great partners in moving the country forward. He looks forward to working with them in the years to come."
Some in the press corps saw this bare-minimum bit of blah-blah as "warm" and supportive as well as pragmatic, given that she – brown eyes, big gavel – is likely to become minority leader whether the president likes it or not.
But here's what Barack Obama really ought to do: Come right out and defend Nancy Pelosi, for heaven's sake. First, because it's not so stand-up, after she did so much of the work making good on his campaign promises, for him to stand by and watch her take so much of the heat. (While officially neutral in his primary race in '08, her efforts on his behalf worked out pretty well for him, didn't they?)
