4. Time He Stops Being His Own Worst Enemy...
This morning I'm hearing a Democratic "consultant" who looks like a whipped puppy getting eaten alive by the GOTB spinster...and saying how President Obama needs to compromise and play nice with the rushpublicans :puke:

By playing "middle of the road" this administration is getting run over by both sides...and it will only get worse as the next election closes in. President Obama needs to stop playing into the GOTB hands and trying to please either "moderates" (if there are any left) and the corporate media. Some backbone would be a good start...so would standing up for the middle class tax cuts. If he caves here, he truly will be in lame duck territory.

5. Luckily we have a president who understands that you can't fix stupid
Its an inherent condition that a great percentage of our electorate is afflicted with. Over 90% of Americans are susceptible to this condition at any given time. Don't believe me? Next time you see Bush making a complete ass out of himself on TV remember that he once had a +90% approval rating. And he was no less a complete ass back then as he is right now. We are surrounded by imbeciles.

Got to play the hand your dealt.

Don

7. right on!
We need more of this type of goodwill toward our Democratic president. There's certainly enough hate and divisive rhetoric here trying to pass off as constructive criticism.

Edited on Sun Nov-14-10 09:23 AM by nenagh
Who actually will be responsible for proposing new legislation after this session is completed?

Will new bills originate in January, from the Repub held Congress? and are all those former bills from Congress that didn't go anywhere in the Senate.. completely gone after the lame duck session is completed?

I am Canadian.... sorry, just trying to understand :)

11. Legislation can still originate in the Senate from our Democrats who hold the majority on the floor
Edited on Sun Nov-14-10 10:26 AM by bigtree
. . . and in committee (where most bills begin before being voted out to the floor).

Even though any bill dealing with money must originate in the House, the Senate can still begin a financial bill by unanimous consent (60 votes needed) and send it to the House for approval.

Right now, until these new legislators are sworn in, both Houses are still under Democratic control, under what we call a lame-duck session. Some things may well be attempted by our lame-ducks, but it's politically dicey and many aren't willing to take the risk. We're looking for the Democrats to bring forward a tax bill in this lame-duck session. When republicans assume control, they will certainly push legislation out of the House to confront and challenge our Democratic Senate to act. Act they will. Most republican bills from the house will be modified (if taken up at all) and sent back if approved.

Anything not financially-oriented can be originated in the Democratic Senate and sent to the House. The House, of course, if it intends to approve Senate action, still has to pass an identical bill or the two bills will go into a reconciliation process where the differences in bills will either be resolved and meshed into one bill for both houses to vote on again; or, the bills can be tabled (put on the shelf); or, they can just remain unaddressed by either house.

The President will still propose legislation, but he will be limited in his influence because of most of the changes I outlined above. His main influence now may be his veto (and the threat of his veto).

13. I want to thank you for this information...
It will take me a little time to understand it all..

In a way it is very unfortunate that after Pres Obama was elected that the media rapidly gave the impression that the Dems had 60 reliable in the Senate.. because that was never a real reality with Lieberman and some of the Bluer Dogs?

Truely, I think you and DU and the Dems are fighting a battle of epic proportions against the forces of the RightWing propaganda machine that has been many years in formulation.

I admire you all greatly.. :)

15. you're welcome
. . . and you're right. For any significant legislative accomplishments of our progressive agenda we really need a progressive majority of Democrats, not just the majority we have now which is a mix of mostly liberal to moderate to conservative Democrats. That's a consequence of regions of our country which can't seem to find enough progressive voter support to nominate and advance more progressive candidates to legislative office. The result is a mixed coalition of Democrats faced off against a mostly mindless pack of knee-jerk republicans who think nothing about voting in lockstep.

Folks ask why republicans always seemed to be able to pass whatever they wanted from their agenda whether they held the minority or the majority. I see the reason as an almost non-existent number of republicans willing to support almost anything Democrats advance, and, a sizable, sufficient number of moderate and conservative Democrats often willing to bend to republican legislation.

Nice to relate this to ya. Best regards.

18. I can only hope, bigtree..
That as the Repubs take over in January, that the old-time Repubs, wedded to the corporations, will anger the TP'ers in such a way that they begin to argue with the Repubs loudly.. and that is picked up by the MSM.

It may help break the successful messaging of the repubs.

Best of luck, bigtree and thank you.. :)

Just one more question if you have the patience to answer..

These Blue Dogs, eg, Blanche Lincoln: are they voting because their vote will help some corporations located in their state?

Or they wedded to profits they will get after they are voted out of office?

Or something different?

Many thanks..

22. Nix, Patterson and Roach... what an unfortunate name for a company..
Though I note that they are a legal company that took on the tobacco companies..

However, in the Pharmacies here in Canada for many years, it is hard not to think of "Nix" as a topical treatment for head lice or, in a stronger strength, as a common treatment for scabies.

Thank you for your information..

I wish you all the very best.. and I think that the RightWing rhetoric is persuasive on either side of the border.

I once heard a political commentator on CBC say about a Conservative running for Parliament... "He sounds fine if he sticks to about 5 sentences.. but after that, he sounds deluded"

Democratic Underground, whether having a momentary hissyfit or not, is such a force for good..

Congratulations on being such a strong voice.. Thanks again.

12. K&R #14 funny how today "they" say the Korean non-deal was Korea being a dick
The past couple of days our penetrating media was claiming he FAILED. Now even Rethugs told AMANPOUR that they have been involved in deals with Korea before and K. has done every weasel gimmick besides seldom honoring PAST committments, and that it was better NOT to accept a bad deal than go for any deal.

I still remember the dork taking our country down while his rich buddies watched from the front door of the bank. If anyone wants to go down that road again, so be it. Just don't count me in.

Our (MY) president is doing just fine and much better than any of us could do. On top of that, he has to fight the racial hate. None of us could handle that with the grace he has shown by taking the high road.

This is the age of instant gratification. Give the guy a break. We're talking about running the country, not a household budget.
