1. What I really want to know is
when will everyone stop whining about it?

23. ok. so to disagree is not to whine. yet you associate anyone disagreeing
and expressing as whining. that does not mean there is either "sniveling or complaining in a peevish way" going on. i guess you were basically letting me know you chose a word that might not be appropriate.

I responded to a poll on something. Then I got a message that the thread was locked or archived. Then I posted about THAT (because it hadn't been posted as locked or archived). and then I got a message about contacting admin and my thread got locked!

Hey, that's discipline!

50. Never apparently...
Anyway the best posts here are by people like JCrowley, Hatrack, Kpete etc. who don't post content-free flame bait and no one is likely to block them.
Its just the trollish ones that are probably being blocked and whining about it and making some huge virtue about not using the feature.
Its just a feature-one can use it or not...Not using it is not some sign of superior values/ virtues IMHO...

9. I have a feeling it's going to slow down conversation eventually.
Especially, with primaries coming up. It's pretty damn annoying finding out that you can't respond to a topic, so people aren't going to want to take risks of offending others and missing out on being able to discuss other topics.

The more people get blocked and the more people that block back the smaller and smaller the circle becomes.

56. Sigh, I'm afraid you are right. The more you try to suppress dissent, even
tho you may have good intentions (which I am sure the mods have), the more you squelch dissent and eviscerate debate. People get tired of this constant blocking, like I did last night. I had a new book from the library and I'm excited about starting my Italian class tomorrow. By the time I get to Venice next fall for my annual European trip, I'll be in good shape!

You see, fellow DUers, there is more to life than this silliness. I'll still post on DU but frankly, I don't feel like doing the revenge thing of blocking my blockers. It is a waste of my time. If I feel there is a lack of real exchange of opinion here, I will just find another place. I think there will be others like me...

18. That exists?
People block other people here? That's lame. We're all liberals or progressives or populists. We should be able to discuss openly and freely amongst each other, even if sometimes we can get out of hand. When discussing politics, it's inevitable that you offend someone once in a while, but from discussion comes light.

I guess it's just because I'm new here...but I don't think I'll ever block someone. Don't see the purpose. I actually like hearing people disagree with me because it tests my viewpoints to see if they stand effectively to criticism.

works better than the more severe idea of blocking. If someone really ticks you off just put them on ignore. It lets them still post but you alone won't see their posts. A lot of time after some time passes you take them off your ignore list and you find that what they have to say doesn't bug you so much - sometimes a person will just annoy you for a time and then it just seems to pass and your fine.

How about a poll to find out how many people have been blocked under this new system? I could start it, but I get bad marks for my poll questions. :(

There will always be enough and more people to keep the conversation.

My guess is that a handful of right-leaning, annoying "moderates" (the kind that show up in every thread with no input besides how much they hate Chavez, Cindy Sheehan and so on) will be blocked by many and they will keep whinging about it...

57. WTF?
I have been lurking and posting since I've forgotten when, and I have never "ignored" a thread during my time here. For one very simple reason:

IT'S UN-AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

What ever happened to "Free Speech", eh? Remember that little thing called the 1st Amendment? Well, if you're going to honor that, then you gotta be able to put up with whatever crap-that-you-don't-agree-with kinda stuff the other poster is saying.

This is not to say that there cannot be rules, etc. But in the final analysis, it is up to the individual poster to just walk away from the on-line argument. And as for "blocking" someone, why would you want to do that? Sometimes, as my sainted Mother would say, you find gold at the bottom of the outhouse.

My 2 cents. Go ahead and block me, it'll be you, not me, missing out.

60. I think this blocking feature will bring down this board
It stifles speech, for people don't want to be blocked. It also allows for abuse, the drive by slam followed by a block in order that you can't reply.

It seems like it is being used by certain members and cliques on this board to create a homoginous, disagreement free zone, where their opinions, and only theirs prevail. A decidedly unAmerican notion.

Hopefully the admins realize the folly of this new feature. If you don't want to deal with somebody, put them on ignore, don't stifle their right to speak with a block.
