Elections highlight Obama's eroding base ....
Near midpoint of presidency, current elections highlight Obama's eroding base
Posted: November 14, 2010 - 12:17am

EXCERPTS ---

WASHINGTON — Near the midpoint of his presidency, Barack Obama’s diverse voter coalition reveals giant cracks and he faces major work repairing his standing among independents in states crucial to his re-election chances.

Catholics. Older people. Women. Young adults. They shifted toward Republicans in this month’s elections and failed to support Obama’s Democratic Party as they did in 2008.

http://lubbockonline.com/national-news/2010-11-14/elections-highlight-obamas-eroding-base?v=1289706495

---------------------------

These articles seem intended to confuse the public --

OBAMA'S BASE is liberals and progressives --

Older people want Social Security and Medicare protected --

Catholics by huge majorities wanted single-payer/government run health care plan

73% and 83% when Latinos/Latinas were included. Catholic women have just as many

abortions as any other women -- and Catholics wanted reproductive services covered

in any private or government health care plan -- including abortion.

The effort by the US Catholic Bishops to influence the health care debate in

meetings with Pelosi and telephone call from Rome -- and Stupak's efforts -- are

intended to try to regain control over women and their bodies which the RCC has

long had.

Did these people actually vote for Repugs? It would make no sense if they did --

and I don't know that this is actually true. Pehaps they just didn't vote?

But what is clear is that it is LIBERALS and PROGRESSIVES who are the base of the party.

3. It's not all that easy for me to support Obama
- No public option with health care reform.
- More handouts to the rich.
- Proposed cuts to SS & Medicare.

Someone tell me, how worse could it be if someone like Sarah Palin were to be elected in 2012?

I'll vote for Obama again, but very begrudgingly.

11. To your list I would add:
*Iraq permanently occupied with over 50,000 American troops,

*WAR escalated in Afghanistan,

*War expanded to other Countries,

*Military spending INCREASED

*War Criminals and War Profiteers protected

*Unitary Executive powers STRENGTHENED and legitimized,

*Spying on Americans INCREASED and legitimized

*"Free Trade" expanded

*Organized LABOR ridiculed and marginalized

*$Billions/Trillions$ of Public Money funneled to Wall Street and the Health Insurance Cartel

There is just NOT much for this old FDR Democrat to get excited about.

"By their works you will know them."

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone

14. I won't.
It's like being drown in an ocean or in a bathtub. Somehow being drown in the ocean is more dignified. Being drown in the bathtub by a supposed "ally" is much worse. I'd definitely vote for anyone who won't drown me, though.

4. There is no reason to vote if
there isn't a candidate that will serve to advance and protect one's needs and interests. The only difference between the candidate's in such circumstances is one of degree. And some folks find it repugnant to vote for such a sorry candidate.

Just my opinion but I suspect that if Obama is losing his base then it is probably because they think he isn't advancing or protecting their interests. That could be a problem of perception. It could also be the reality - and if it is then he should not expect them to vote for him to retain his position.

6. LOTS more people would begin voting if the Dems really did things that obviously benefitted them.
It is such a shame that so few vote in this country when so many here believe we are the role model for democracy.

Many people clearly stayed home this past election.

The conservatives have been open and honest that they don't want people (i.e. the masses) to vote because it makes it much more difficult for them to win. Since conservative/corporate interests have so clearly taken over leadership of the Democratic Party it is no wonder that so many don't vote. It is IMPOSSIBLE for many of us to advocate for them honestly at this point, and that has an effect at the polls. It is not our fault that we find it so difficult to advocate for them. They don't appear to be representing our interests. At all.

9. Actually, Dems have but there are no quick fixes to this economy.
Independent turnout made the difference in this election. There was a 36% swing in favor of the GOP from 2008 to 2010.

13. Of course... and great point .... huge numbers of Americans aren't voting ....

Repugs like to propagandize that it's because "they like the way things are!" --

Rather, from what I've heard from voters -- not recently -- is that they have no

faith in our elections -- and certainly no faith in the candidates we are given

by TPB.

We can see that any time a populist candidate speaks -- there is a huge positive

reaction and turnout -- Obama used that technique and abused it!

PS: And Democratic Party has long largely been ignoring these turned off voters

which suits the GOP quite well!

16. Exactly ... and DLC/corporate wing has purposefully limited the populist discussions
which bring the public out to vote -- it's purposefully done.

No one looks to the US for anything any longer -- certainly not for democracy.

We are as the UN has frequently pointed out the "terrorists" --!!

Many no longer believe that we have honest elections -- count me in on that! --

it's pretty much a scam from the word "go."

Until we get rid of the computers -- which should be "Un-Constitutional" we will

have these upside down results and lies to cover them.

And probably more W's....

8. They are cherrypicking. AA and hispanic voters turned out, as did Asians (ask Angle & Whitman).

Independent turnout made the difference in this election. There was a 36% swing in favor of the GOP from 2008 to 2010. Unfortunately, there are far fewer self-described liberals than self-described conservatives or independents in the electorate.

15. That doesn't sound believable .... in 2008 LIBERALS elected Obama ....
what we are being given to believe is that LIBERALS suddenly became conservatives?

Changed their entire value base?

Let's see .... 76% of the public wanted single payer/government run health care --

but they changed their minds in 2010 and wanted a GOP government that would ensure

not only that they'd never get universal health care, but that the token deform Obama

gave the public -- even that would be overturned?

This is a liberal nation -- if it wasn't the right wing wouldn't have to try to

control everything -- and they do have to -- because any bit of truth is a huge danger

to their propaganda.
