Westboro Bus Tires Flattened In Okla.
McALESTER, Okla. -- Kansas church members who travel the region to protest at military funerals have been given less than a rousing welcome at McAlester, Okla.

The Tulsa World reports that a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., showed up Saturday in McAlester at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey. After coping with what police said was more than a thousand counterprotesters, the church members found their minivan had flat tires on both the front and rear wheels on the passenger side.

Police said the tires had been slashed.

Officers said the church members were unable to find anyone to fix the flats in McAlester, and had to call a flatbed service truck to transport the van to a Walmart several miles away.

protesting a gay funeral some of the Oklahomans would have probably joined the Phelps.

22. They seem to have quit protesting gay funerals
They know if they protest a gay funeral, they're going to find some sympathy for their action. They also know if they protest a soldier's funeral they're going to piss off someone and MAYBE one of the Phelpses will get attacked physically. This is the intent: to get one of their asses kicked, so the ass kicker can be sued into oblivion.

The phelps family does protest soldiers funerals in hope that someone will confront them and so they can sue. And yes, if they were protesting a gay funeral in Oklahoma, chances are they would be joined by some of the local knuckle-draggers.

30. Phelps and co protested at Hillel at the University of Oklahoma...
and had many, many protesters. Once, they protested at a high school in a very conservative town, and the kids simply walked out of school so as not to give them an audience.

So, yes, there are knuckledraggers. But not the kids here, hopefully many of them will help change this place. Thanks for the broad brush and all that.

The dollar speaks louder than principle with Walmart. In fact Walmart executives have no principles. Everything there is about profit.

Attacking them is counter-productive. If everybody ignored them, they would eventually go away. They thrive on negative attention and money obtained through lawsuits.

Really? Has it happened yet?

What happens is, when everybody ignores them they up the ante - that's why they started protesting at soldiers' funerals to begin with. They DEMMAND attention.

I'm just hoping for the day they decide the only protest left is self-immolation.

I don't approve of vandalism. I would have done the neighborly thing and left a cup of sugar (or 20 lbs since I'm feeling especially generous today) with these poor individuals. Of course, since these folks were away from their vehicle and little old me doesn't have all day to be neigborly, I'd have to pour the sugar in their little old gas tanks. Bless their hearts. Poor clogged fuel pump.

55. I don't approve of vandalism
And I'm not going to excuse it because it happened to someone I find odious in the extreme. Having dealt with the good people from Westboro Baptist on a couple of occasions, I can state categorically that being vandalized and ostracized will reinforce their warped opinion that they are being persecuted for the sake of the gospel. Those verses from the Sermon on the Mount or the Sermon on the Plain are the be-all and end-all of their understanding the Bible.

The most effective way to treat with them is to show them wholly unmerited kindness. When we were graced by their presence in Kansas City one July afternoon, we bought them all cold drinks from a couple of street vendors (on the theory that bigotry is thirsty work). They refused, of course, but we didn't give them any context for their out-of-control hatred. So we left the drinks at their feet as almost an offering. Within a few minutes, they had vamoosed and taken the drinks with them. They count on hostility and feed off it like hate vampires or something. These are not people with normal values or attitudes. They welcome their unwelcome, and count it as proof that they're doing the Lord's work. Grace and kindness discombobulate them in the same way a normal person is puzzled by unprovoked animosity.
