This joblessness is sucking big time.

2. To whomever donated on my behalf, thank you! Very sweet (I swear, I was
not asking for a donation. When I am able to do so, I will do the same for someone else). :) Hugs!!

3. There has been more than one occasion when I couldn't donate more than 5 dollars
INCLUDING the $1 processing fee. But I've always done it.

Don't feel that if you can't donate a lot, you shouldn't donate at all.

5. $5 or $6 is my weekly gas allotment
I only can afford to drive a few days a week. My main priority is getting to my dad's house to help him with his physical therapy as he recovers from a fall. It may not seem like a lot to you, but for those of us hanging by a thread, every dollar is accounted for when there aren't enough to go around.

10. True. I donated earlier this year, but now it's getting to be a bit hairy, so I need
watch every dollar pretty soon.

8. Thank you. Laid off in January of this year, and unemployment will end
next week (unless another extension is granted).

Best of luck and I really hope something turns up for you.

7. I'll have to wait until August, when my last donation runs out.
I donate, annually, at least, but it comes from my credit card.

And I'm sure Skinner would have been more than happy to bump you a few months :)

13. Wishing you luck in your job search, mcrainbowgrrrl.
Hugs back to you!

I'm thinking I may ramp up doing the freelance thing (marketing/communications) and turn it into a business. The job market is just so bad right now.

I did a freelance job a month ago, which was great. Lovely client, paid on time...she was terrific!

I have found, however, that I have had a few people call/email me trying to get free work (freelance does not mean free work) or try to use me so they can get work for themselves (they had sketchy details about what they wanted to do, no guarantees I will have a role, etc.).

It's been a learning experience, that's for sure.

I've learned the same lesson- freelancing doesn't equal free... and when you try and bill, some get that wounded look on their faces and you know they're thinking "i had to pay for that? wasn't i doing you a favor by giving you work?"

18. I do some volunteer stuff (mainly social media) for my friend who owns her business, but she
gives me great advice and is an awesome reference for me (besides being a friend), so it's cool.

16. I've had a couple of leechers when I do freelance work
It's such an PAIN in the ass to waste gas driving over there and take care of it when they want it for 'free'.

I've been servicing this guy for years because he has such good weed. Now that I'm licensed, I really don't need to see him. He's a well-known freeloader and hasn't upgraded his computer for years, insisting on keeping everything the same.

He finally got his ass off the chair and bought himself a new tower computer. He's still asking me to help secure it.

17. One of my friends who owns her own business gave me a good tip:
create a contract in which you ask for 1/2 of the fee up front (when they sign). That way, if something happens, at least you got paid for something.

23. Neither can I. I'm in the same boat.
I would love to support the site as well. I learn a great deal from my fellow DUer's and wish I could contribute to the cost of running DU once again.
