Army To Spend Another $437 Million Dollars On 'Smart' Weapons
unhappycamper note: Since the ‘Pentagon’ (Righthaven LLC? Gannett?) has ‘requested’ that I only post one paragraph from articles on Army Times, and Airforce Times, To keep in that same (new) tradition, I will also do the same for for articles on Navy Times, Marine Corps Times, stripes.com and military.com.
To read the article in the military's own words, you will need to click the link.

Read all about Fair Use here. It sure is beginning to smell like fascism.

unhappycamper summary of this article: If you read the article, you'll see that "The Army plans on purchasing more than 12,500 XM25 systems" and that each system costs somewhere between $25 to $35 grand a pop.

I seriously doubt the lower number from these guys.

A soldier demonstrates the XM25 Counter Defilade Targeting Engagement System at Aberdeen Test Center, Md. The Army has begun testing and training with five of the prototype "smart" weapons in Afghanistan. The weapon fires rounds that can be programmed to explode on impact, in front of or behind an object. Limited production of the XM25 is expected to begin in 2012.

The XM25 — which is not much bigger than a standard service rifle — fires 25 mm rounds that can be programmed to explode on impact, in front of or behind an object. The weapon allows soldiers to kill enemies hiding behind walls or other cover by firing above, or to the side, of the wall from up to 700 meters away.
