I read that somewhere but I haven't heard anything else about it.
(btw, I do think it is absolutely conclusive that he killed himself since he mailed goodbye letters to his family members before he killed himself - his family members also absolutely believe he killed himself - which, to me, makes his story all the more tragic.)
But when Koppel was talking about the "honorable" news organizations of the past, I couldn't help but think about Walter Pincus lying for the CIA and Time and other well-regarded news orgs hounding this man out of a job because he told the truth... a truth that have never been disputed since he reported the fact that the CIA was helping the Contras smuggle cocaine into the US to fund their war.
Just one more reason to acknowledge our mainstream news outlets have been in the business of creating propaganda and covering for crimes for a while.
That doesn't even being to mention shilling for the Iraq War.
Oh, and I have copies of the New York Times from the 1940s and, after the atomic bombs were dropped in Japan, their reporter was talking about the safety of being in the area. Maybe that guy was just a victim of the govt's propaganda tho.
a little digression, but would LOVE to see a movie about Gary Webb.
