Just a few minutes ago CNN reported that Representative Nancy Pelosi was elected to the Minority Leader job by a vote of 150-43. Many would think that would be seen as a sign of strength; however, the reporters at CNN don't see it that way. While discussing the vote Dana Bash and Brooke Baldwin claimed that the vote showed that many in the Democratic caucus wanted to get rid of Nancy Pelosi. Dana Bash claimed that since 43 people voted against Pelosi that spelled trouble in that more than just the blue dog democrats had to vote against Pelosi in order to get to that number in that many of the blue dogs lost their elections.
This reasoning is wrong on at least two points. First, Nancy Pelosi won the vote by a large margin. Even though 43 democrats voted against her more than three times as many people voted for her than against her. Second, the Blue Dog Coalition has about 26 members still remaning in the House. It is likely that all of these members voted against Pelosi. If so that means only 16 non-Blue Dog Democrats voted against her. That means if you take away the Blue Dog vote Pelosi won by a margin of 150-16. No matter how you look at it the vote that elected Pelosi to the Minority Leader position was a good showing for Pelsoi.
