Reid Should Blatantly Ask Murkowski To Switch To A D In The Senate
Edited on Wed Nov-17-10 05:59 PM by stopbush
Give her a decent chair of a committee.

The Rs deserted her and threw their $ behind Miller. She already resigned her power positions in the R caucus to run as a write-in candidate. She is the closest thing to a liberal one can find in today's R Party.

She won on her name recognition, not her Party affiliation. Alaskans should have no expectation that she will stay a Republic.

She will have little if any power in the Senate as an R, and if you're going to switch, why put an I next to your name when a D gets you in the game?

And, she doesn't have to run again for 6 years. Switch to D NOW and you'll be on the right side of history going forward.

Thoughts?

11. OK. I'll bite - which Senate R is more of a liberal than Murkowski?
Collins? Snowe?

12. Yes, both of them.
Snowe and Collins are, at the very least, pro-choice and socially moderate. Murkowski is pro-life and far enough right that it takes a borderline fascist like Miller to go any farther right.

Collins:

Snowe:

Murkowski:

I'd even suggest that there are some like Lindsay Graham, Dick Lugar or Chuck Grassley who are at least more moderate on certain issues than she is. I've never seen anything to suggest Murkowski is "liberal" in any way. She's just not nutty enough for extremists teabaggers in Alaska, like Bennett in Utah.

9. Actually the GOP abandoned Miller
I think they half-heartedly supported him when he got the nomination, just like they did with O'Donnell but in the end they realized it just wasn't worth it.

25. He's still on record as the GOP candidate
They're obligated to help him. Or else why would anyone seek their endorsement?

19. I agree.
Murkowski is too republican to become a democrat. Democrats will need her on some votes but are better off without her on other votes. Democrats are better served setting up candidates to win Collins and Snowe's seat when tea partiers take them out in primaries. If democrats get back to their roots and return to being a hard nosed party of the people, and fight every vote, Collin's and Snowe's seats will belong to democrats while democrats hold seats pundits now think we will lose.

14. I like her but like another one said she can be more helpful
as a republican if she is willing to support the Democrats on certain legislation because it shows them working together.

18. Murkowski should stay independent.
But her vote is certainly in play now for democrats. Murkowski needs Alaska democrats if she plans to keep winning elections. But she also need the reasonable republicans in Alaska who voted for her in the general. Her best option is to tread a thin line, this poster thinks that Alaskan democrats and republicans that voted for her in the general will understand and mostly agree with her votes. I would have loved to see McAdams win, but given McAdam's vote total, the next best option prevailed.
