Nancy Pelosi bore a heavy share of criticism for the Democrats' bruising losses in the midterm elections, but on Wednesday the 70-year-old California congresswoman was once again elected to lead her party in the House when it resumes for its 112th session in January.
Pelosi beat out Rep. Heath Shuler (D-North Carolina) in a secretly held internal party vote by 150 to 43.
"Our consensus is that we go out there listening to the American people," Ms. Pelosi said after the vote. "It's about jobs, it's about reducing the deficit and it's about fighting for the middle class. I look forward to doing that with this great leadership team."
Though she was much-maligned during the campaign season and featured in attack ads in roughly half of the country's House races, Pelosi has been a major force in the Democratic Party for years.
