Voters Could Decide To Ban Same Sex Marriage For Good
Republicans will take control of the North Carolina House and Senate in January and have the power to put same sex marriage in the forefront of state politics. While state law currently bans same sex marriage many Republicans want to go further and put it in the state constitution. They say that would help protect the law from judges that could throw out the current ban on same sex marriage.
In past years Democrats have killed proposed legislation that would put the issue on the ballot across the state and let voters decide whether or not to change the constitution. Starting in January Republicans will control both the house and senate and could bring the issue to the forefront. Democrats say the current state law is restrictive enough without changing the constitution.
North Carolina is the only state in the South that does not have a constitutional ban on same sex marriage. 28 states have a constitutional ban.
