131. I googled
'Carrington,' and watched the movie trailer. He also said: "People in love should never live together. When they do, the inevitable result is that they either fall out of love or drive one another insane."

How did I miss this movie? I love Emma. I was living in the 'fly over' state of Missouri and maybe it just got one week of exposure. I remember that happening there.

I love both quotes.

The rich got that way by stealing, lying, thieving, cheating and otherwise swindling other people. All of their assets are ill gotten gains that rightfully belong to others.

Would you allow a car thief to continue using the stolen vehicle to commute to work with? I don't think you would.

The fascists were quaking in their jackboots during that time!

That is what is missing today: hope. And for very good reason if you pay attention to the Corporate appeasers and their actions (both parties). Without a massive clogging of the streets with poor and middle class bodies the power structure will never change!

We need a leader to put a date out there for all out march against Capitalist control of our lives. Also, stop buying products made in a foreign country (unless you will suffer great harm without it). Build your own, repair your old one, whatever. Stop feeding the satanic pack of wolves by buying the goods made in factories they moved overseas.

Fight with your words AND your deeds! And keep up the good work!

74. Yes - If making the rich into the super-rich actually created jobs...
... then this country would have had zero unemployment at the end of W's eight years.

Rich people simply don't create jobs. And even if they did, they would not do so in an economic vacuum (i.e. shrunken middle class and nervous consumers).

Contrast that with today: "I will continue to include Republican ideas in all my legislation" -- Barrack Obama

Prior to debate of the economic recovery package that will save or create millions of jobs, cut taxes for hardworking Americans and invest in our future, President Obama incorporated into his legislation ideas proposed and embraced by Congressional Republicans.

The administration allowed the lowly tea baggers to totally control the national dialogue on health care reform for months and then they gave in to anyone they could find to surrender to. They are doing the IDENTICAL thing now by hemming and hawing for months instead of just saying tax cuts for the rich will END on December 31, 2010!!! How hard is it to do the right thing? I'm SO tired of these people whining , crying and carrying on about fucking TAXES.
The Republican party is nothing more than a few ultra-rich dirty greedy pigs and multitudes of (proudly) misinformed sheep that buy their socialist boogyman bullshit.
The rich have willfully decimated the nations manufacturing base by moving production overseas to take advantage of cheap labor and "business friendly" governments that allow them to pollute with impunity while at the same time using that very same cheap overseas labor as an excuse for not paying American workers living wages.
As far as I am concerned there are wealthy people stealing from ME every single day. Every time, cash my paycheck, take my kid to the doctor, or pay my bills. Some rich person or other always has their hand in MY god damned pocket while at the same time some other rich person is refusing to let me keep a fair percentage of the value I help to create with honest effort and skill.

the government made the mess while kissing the asses of the rich. Everything the wealthy wanted (with few exceptions) they got. And what have they done? Shipped more and more jobs overseas, off-shored the corporations to avoid paying taxes and created one financial disaster after another. Go ahead and defend the rich if you like, and don't hold them accountable for taking the country to the brink of ruin, both economically and socially, but I doubt you'll find many who agree with your teabaggers view here.

They are in the progress of attempting to undermine social programs that make a more effectively functioning society, just to hoard the wealth.

Are layoffs and outsourcing not already occurring? Did they not occur even with the Bush tax cuts, even with the massive corporate welfare programs that benefit the corporations?

When I said tax the rich I am speaking of the obscenely wealthy; as in, say, 2% wealthiest. Sure, tax corporations, too. And I'll complain all I want.

51. Good. Tax them. Tax them at a 99% rate. But I'm not sure how that gets an unemployed person a
good job. Or is it all about revenge for you?

54. It's not about revenge at all.
Edited on Fri Nov-19-10 07:31 PM by Hissyspit
It's about fairness and common sense and solutions at a time of financial crisis, largely brought about by policies intended to make the rich richer. The sense of anger in my post comes from my reaction to the absurdity of the rhetoric and dialogue that is coming out of D.C.

And I'm not calling for a 99% rate.

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/nov/17/opinion/la-oe-adler-taxpolicy-20101117

What did the new president do about the economy? President Clinton in 1993 proposed to raise the highest marginal tax rate immediately from 31% to 39.6%. In a Wall Street Journal article, Martin Feldstein, the former chief economic advisor to President Reagan and then as well as now a professor of economics at Harvard, opined that "Mr. Clinton's proposal to raise the marginal tax rates of high-income individuals would hurt incentives, weaken the economy and waste investment dollars."

This was, of course, a reincarnation of the GOP's trickle-down theory — tax cuts for the rich would eventually benefit the middle and lower classes. But Republicans did not let the fact that the Reagan tax cuts had decimated government services and created huge deficits stand in their way. Claiming that it was wrong to raise taxes on the rich in the middle of a recession, every one of them, in both houses, voted against it. Forty-one Democratic representatives and six Democratic senators joined them. The tax increase passed by only the narrowest of margins. In the House the vote was 218 to 216, while in the Senate the increase passed with a tie-breaking vote by Vice President Al Gore.

And what were the consequences? In the seven years that followed, the unemployment rate decreased steadily, every single year, until it reached 4% in 2000.

56. I'm Curious...why are you defending the rich?
Edited on Fri Nov-19-10 07:21 PM by ProudDad
Statistically, nearly all of them are born into their "wealth"...

By externalizing all of the environmental costs while pocketing the "profits" of exploiting our Mother Earth, the entire corporate capitalist system is busy destroying our planet as a viable environment for air-breathing mammals...

A vast majority of "business" is either makework bullshit that supports the capitalists (remember, the ones destroying our planet for us!), war, "finance" and "Banking" (think Ponzi Scheme), Wal-Mart, etc. ...

And most of our best paying blue-collar jobs have already been outsourced...and the ones that haven't are on the chopping block because yesterday's interest MUST BE PAID from today's "excess labor" provided, SURPRISE, by us, the working class...

And the real work of providing meaningful goods and services can be done domestically and in less than half the hours that USAmericans presently are forced to work (to provide the profit for the rich fucks who are destroying our planet <remember that?>) by relocalizing and right-sizing into steady state economies dedicated to fulfilling human needs instead of corporate profit...

The "rich" are leeches on the community -- they are the ones who make out like the bandits they are by privatizing the commons and socializing the damage...

Fuck 'em.

If I had my way, I'd have a confiscatory tax rate (say 120%) on anything "made" in any form after the basic requirement of oh, probably 75K - 100K tops (in the worst case) has been satisfied...

These "rich" folks you are defending with such vigor are KILLING OUR PLANET (remember?)...

142. We're working on the premise that there are two "economies"
there's the REAL economy of goods and services that serve human needs and reasonable wants...

Then there's the phony Vampire Capitalist Ponzi scheme of an "economy" -- fueled by fossil fuels, debt based money and manufactured desires...

It's the 2nd economy that's collapsing and is where the slavery mis-titled "jobs" emanate from... It's that "economy" that must quickly collapse before it renders the Earth uninhabitable...

The Real economy can be restructured and relocalized with steady state right sized local economies to enable rational transfer of goods and services. We don't need Goldman Sachs or Citibank for that but can do it with local and regional credit clearing mechanisms...

I don't think he'll understand though... :)

120. Don't use broad brushstrokes...........
It is dangerous to use broad brushstrokes in the context of tax policy.

I abhor the fact that wealth has continued to accumulate at the very top of our society while real income for working families has declined. But I think it is dangerous and a bit folly to simply cry "tax the rich".

I am in no way opposed to people accumulating wealth as long as that wealth is earned by hard work, innovation, competitive advantage, etc. But I do believe that those with wealth should pay a higher percentage of their income in the form of taxes. They are in a better position to pay those taxes, i.e. the percentage of their income needed to sustain their families and put away a little for a rainy day is much lower than those that get up and go to work every day.

For many of the wealthiest Americans their only "work" is meeting with their investment managers over cocktails and lunch. For many most if not all of their income is what I call "lazy" income, i.e. they just sit back and let the money roll in. Yes they are putting their money at risk by investing in businesses, etc. but from a human perspective they don't toil at a job for 50 or 60 hours a week.

I would not be opposed to a temporary extension of the Bush tax cuts for everyone or permanently lowering the marginal rate for the wealthy from pre-Bush cut levels provided the tax code was cleaned up to prevent them from paying no taxes at all.

If the wealthy want lower marginal rates then let them have them but we eliminate many of the tax deductions and tax avoidance schemes. The problem I have is not only are their tax rates low relative to their income but many avoid tax altogether. And for those that don't remember that the rate on long-term capital gains is only 15%.

So for someone who takes home say $400,000 in earned income but $250,000 in capital gains, 1/3 of the income is taxed at 15%. I would like for 1/3 of my income to be taxed at that lower rate.

...just because I didn't go into detail. I consider it counter-meme (of the "pissed-off" kind) to the ideas that what you mention is off the table. Everything you suggest/describe falls under the umbrella of tax the rich. Obviously, there is devil in the details, and I added a few from other people in the follow-up posts upthread. Unfortunately, the odds are against any of my posts, detailed or angry or otherwise, having any impact at all. The "fix" seems to be in.
