Freshman Republican Andy Harris gave Democrats an early Christmas present this week when he interrupted a Capitol Hill orientation session to ask why his government health care took so long to kick in. Now, four Democratic representatives are running with the gaffe, calling on House and Senate Republicans to forgo federal health benefits on the same grounds that led them to vote against the health care law. In a letter addressed to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and incoming Speaker John Boehner, Democrats Joe Crowley (NY), Linda Sanchez (Calif.), Donna Edwards (Md.), and Tim Ryan (Ohio) reprimanded Republicans for "
in the very kind of coverage that you want for yourselves, and then around and it to Americans who don't happen to be Members of Congress." In the letter, which borders on gleeful, the authors add that the public should know "whether the members of Congress and members-elect who have called for the repeal of health insurance reform are going to stand by their opposition by opting out of the care available to them." So far, they haven't gotten a response.
