Just a few ounces. The human body, as anyone who's watched an old war movie knows, is really good at cushioning an explosive blast.

It would be a bloody mess, but (probably) not enough to take down a commercial airliner. That's why the current scanners are effective - they do detect explosives strapped to someone's body in larger amounts.

This is a terrible runaway non-issue. We shouldn't be wasting the Lame Duck session on this.

ruled in Bell v Wolfish that cavity searches on detainees are constitutional.

Knives and other contraband have been smuggled into jails in cigar tubes hidden in the rectum. Drugs are commonly smuggled in rectums, vaginas, nasal passages and any available cavity where customs agents have authority, under prescribed circumstances, to search.

I find the entire subject somewhat distasteful but contraband can be a problem, and problems must be dealt with.

(Fondling the privates of airline passengers does not, however, seem to solve any known problem.)
