Glenn Beck And Sean Hannity Dropped From Their Philadelphia Radio Station
Mediaite has learned Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity are being dropped from their Philadelphia radio station, WPHT 1210 (The Big Talker), in January.

The station is a CBS affiliate, and Philadelphia is the fourth largest radio market.

Beck currently is the host from 9am-12pmET and Hannity from 3-6pmET. According to Radio-info.com:

Taking Beck’s 9am-noon slot is the local Dom Giordano, currently 6-10pm. Then comes Rush Limbaugh, noon-3pm, and Smerconish – who replaces Sean Hannity.

Rachel Nelson, spokesperson for Premiere Radio Networks, tells Mediaite: “While it’s our policy not to comment on the business of our affiliates, we’ve appreciated our partnership with WPHT and look forward to sharing exciting news about The Sean Hannity Show and The Glenn Beck Program in the future.”

1. They must not have been bringing in the $$$, which speaks highly of the Philadelphia
radio audience. Although I see Limbaugh is still there.

Looking a bit one-sided to me.

B-b-b-but...but...I always thought that Hannity and Beck were popular...and...and...some of the "biggest" radio guys in the country! Haha! Guess they're not all that after all.

18. Giordano is unlistenable
but I'm still happy to see Hannity and Beck going off the air in Philly (at least on that station, which has all the Phillies broadcasts)

7. It's even more embarrassing....
Before Beck went national, and in the early days of the syndicated show, WPHT was his flagship station and where he broadcast from.

10. Radio Hitting The Panic Button...
While CBS is one of the stronger radio groups out there, that's not saying much. Revenues and ratings are deprsesed...and its been this way for a while. Something's gotta change.

Hate radio is doing terribly on the new People Meters that Arbitron uses to rate stations. In the past syndicators and stations could make up numbers but the meters say different and the advertisers are seeing large drops in the numbers on those stations. Most of these stations are catering to an even faster shrinking audience...those over 60 (who count very little as far as advertising agencies are concerned). Just recently a Seattle hate radio station switched to oldies for this reason and rumors are more station changes are on the way.

While these shitstains are gone from the powerful WPHT, I'm sure some smaller Philly station will grab 'em. But the writing is very much on the wall that the hey days of hate radio are finally fading.

11. Radio USED to be a "local thing"
with LOTS of local businesses giving a "shout-out" to the people in the town, about their special sales or new merchandise.

There were contests, and the programming was LOCAL.. People wanted to tune in, to get THEIR weather, information about THEIR schools, and to perhaps call in & talk on the radio.

With consolidation & all the syndicated/canned "shows", if that particular host or ideology does not appeal to YOU, you just change the station. (and never even heard the almighty ads)

and

since so many local businesses went bye-bye, thanks to malls & big box stores, that area of advertising left too.

I guess it's just a sign of the times, but with no more local radio & local newspapers going away, people sometimes have NO idea what is even happening in their own community:(

12. Spot On...
I worked in several of those "live and local" operations. We covered our town like a blanket...lunch menus, obituaries, basketball games...and most important local news and personality. Now most of these stations are repeaters of corporate networks that is cheap to run. In many markets, "deregulation" killed local radio like Wallyworld killed local retail. Today all the creativity and connections are gone...a textbook case of how too big to fail leads to systemic failure.

The good thing is many of these talented people have found a new medium...Internet Radio. Not much money but a lot of voices are being empowered out there.

Cheers...

14. This is why I love our progressive station--it's all about LOCAL politics.
Sure, they have Stephanie Miller, Big Ed, Thom, etc. But the bulk of the programming are local folks doing call-in programs about local and state issues which affect us the most. There's a lot of discussion in particular about local educational concerns, too. Nearly all the ads are from local businesses and I actively support them.

17. I made a point to contact the Seattle station
and tell them with their decision to witch formats we'd add them to our presets for the first time.

FWIW CBS also owns our local Progressive station -- AM1090.

13. They can't keep losing money on them

Radio tried to pull a fast one, saturating us with pro-corporate whores and bozos like Beck and Hannity.

But the American public doesn't want to hear it.

Radio is in a dismal state.

Until PUBLICLY OWNED radio begins to reflect the attitudes and opinions of most of America - rather than just the 20% of idiots who love hate radio, these stations will continue to bleed revenue.

Too bad, so sad.
