More than forty US millionaires ask President Obama to end their Bush-era tax breaks

More than forty US millionaires have united in asking President Barack Obama to end tax breaks established for them during the Bush Administration.

"For the fiscal health of our nation and the well-being of our fellow citizens, we ask that you allow tax cuts on incomes over USD 1,000,000 to expire at the end of this year as scheduled," the organization known as the Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength stated in an open letter to Obama on their website.

"We make this request as loyal citizens who now or in the past earned an income of USD 1,000,000 per year or more," it added.

The group is comprised of well-known millionaires, including hedge fund legend Michael Steinhardt, super trial lawyer Guy Saperstein, and Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry's.

The Patriotic Millionaires' campaign was launched at the same time that the Center for Responsive Politics revealed nearly half of the members of the US House of Representatives and the Senate are millionaires, Salon Media Group reported.

We are writing to urge you to stand firm against those who would put politics ahead of their country.

We have done very well over the last several years. Now, during our nation’s moment of need, we are eager to do our fair share. We don’t need more tax cuts, and we understand that cutting our taxes will increase the deficit and the debt burden carried by other taxpayers. The country needs to meet its financial obligations in a just and responsible way.

Letting tax cuts for incomes over $1,000,000 expire, is an important step in that direction.

10. Good, but where's the supposedly "lefty" Hollywood stars? Where's Jon Stewart & Colbert? And

Kid Rock, who claims in his annoying rally song to "care."

I'm giving them all time to learn about this, but maybe we could help the cause along by emailing the story to our favorite wealthy public figures who haven't yet signed. Being a major fan of his, I think I'll start with Springsteen. Although, I'm not such a major fan that I know where to reach him. Guess I'll need to do some research!

... on such a list as this would tend to dilute the message that the group is trying to send. NOT that celebrity millionaires are any less valid on the issue.... but that they are all too often DISMISSED as "just celebrities." :(

IMO, this patriotic millionaire effort needs even more "business types" to sign on so that their collective message will be taken seriously.
