secretaries make coffee right?
I am watching HLN -- the anchor is Natasha Curry. She was just reporting on bernie madoff's secretaries. She said something that really pissed me off. I am paraphrasing but it was something like -- bernie madoff's secretaries weren't just filing papers and making coffee --

I mean really? MAKING COFFEE. I wrote to them on their website and complained at how insulting that comment was, but who knows if anyone even looks at those comments.

1. I was expected to make coffee and get it for the boss.
I deliberately made really terrible coffee and often delivered it to the boss lukewarm because I was often stopped on my way from the coffee room to discuss "business" of course.

2. I don't know the context of the comment, but might it have been . . .
an effort by Curry to point out that Madoff's assistants were involved in more than just menial tasks, that they share in the culpability for his crimes and should be seen in that light, and not simply as "innocents caught in a nefarious plot"?

4. I did a one-year stint as a secretary to a VP at a company.
I made coffee. It was in the job description.

5. Making coffee is certainly an onerous chore..
:eyes:

If making coffee is the worst part of your job I'd damn sure love to have it, I've done stuff far, far worse than making coffee in order to put food on my family.

11. Well, if it's glorified maid service, then yes, it's a bit demeaning.

12. "Making the coffee" is really just a metaphor
for women being treated like glorified maids or mommies on the job and being asked to endure all kinds of inappropriate stuff, from being groped to handling their bosses personal problems, stuff that had nothing to do with the actual business of the company.

If "making the coffee" was all that was involved, there would be no problem. Honest. lol

14. It can be demeaning or it could be a welcomed break from the cubicle.

Did I miss a chance to be outraged?

10. I very nearly got fired for a coffee-making incident early in my legal career.....
Edited on Sat Nov-20-10 04:53 PM by msanthrope
An 'of counsel' partner, and noted perv, came into my office and this exchange took place:

"How's about a cup of coffee, girly?"

"Just cream, thanks!"

That old goat was so goddamn dumbfounded he stood there for several minutes before shuffling off.

Later on one of the senior partners gave me a stern talking-to. I once watched HIS secretary put a booger in his coffee....and I said nothing.

ETA--my secretary and I always swapped out coffee-making duties. I eventually worked in a firm where there was paid staff to make damn fine coffee....

16. Yep. He's famous for his Turkish coffee with cardamon and cloves.
If he likes you he will rinse the cups in rosewater.
