I had some fun with the Salvation Army today!
This morning I was writing a check to the Salvation Army for food donations this holiday season. At the bottom of the stub was the question, 'Could we pray for any special person in your life?'. Well now that they asked I guess I could come up with a few. Granted, I 'm not a praying kind of soul but if these folks are going to spend time talking to their god well, I don't mind giving them a subject or two. My answer.....Please pray that god gives special guidance to our President Obama and pray also that the GOP can be less harsh with those less fortunate and extend their hands to those in need!

We have to drive this home every chance we get!

1. I heard an evangelical pastor preach recent and talk about how excited his son was to meet Obama.
Apparently the President met his son's high school football team and the son texted him about it and was excited and dad was excited about telling about it. In closing he said that he knew that some there did not like the President so in that case they had better pray for him.

As usual they took a collection that day and since I was a visitor I was told I was under no obligation to give anything, but they did take a special collection that day for the needy of the community as we left and I did give to that.

3. My sister is very disabled and very right wing.
I have promised to go to church with her this winter and it is painful to listen to most of the time but as you have noted, every once in a while they do reach out. This church reaches all the way to Ethiopia, passing over the hungry little ones down the road. I try not to judge or question but it is not easy!

2. My little brother is gay. Years ago he belonged to a church
group called Catholic Archdiocesan Gay and Lesbian Ministries. During the holidays one year, his local chapter chose the Salvation Army as the recipient of a modest donation. The Salvation Army actually returned the check to the group with a note attached that said "We do not accept donations from organizations such as yours." I've often wondered if recipients of the Salvation Army's efforts care if the money that puts a roof over their heads, or food in their stomach, was donated by a gay, lesbian or straight person? If I were homeless and hungry, I'm thinking I wouldn't give a rip where help came from.

4. That is such a sad story.
It is pretty clear that the person who sent the check back with a very unchristian note had plenty to eat!

7. The Salvation Army has enough money to fund anti-gay initiatives.
They don't need my money. I'll donate to a food bank, thanks. Or better yet, I'll give food to my neighbors.
