Saw "Morning Glory" last night...
Edited on Sun Nov-21-10 07:44 AM by PCIntern
the antithesis of "Network" and what we were 'warned about' in "Broadcast News" wherein the Infotainment gal is now the heroine and this is now the norm. Frittata anyone? (You have to have seen the film to get that - sorry)

We're 'there', folks...anyone want to move to Mars with me?

1. It started MANY years ago

Good Morning, America & The Today Show started us down this path..

Back then, they wanted to appeal to the stay-at-home Moms & older folks who often did not even turn on the tv until it was time for the soaps.

These fluffy news shows were an easy way to get them to turn on the tv early in the am while feeding the family breakfast, and then to just leave it on until the soaps started.

These were not hard hitting news shows, but news that was "safe" for the kids to watch.

Until they came along, early am shows were usually cartoons.

By populating them with non-threatening women and loading them up with cooking bits & yuk-yuk banter, it was supposed to be news-lite..

The "real" news came on in the evening..when "Dad" was home from work & while Mom was making dinner..

3. Is that a reference to Robin What's Her Name (Meade?)
on Headline news? I think that's what she says ('Morning Glory). Back when I was doing some self-physical therapy with my broken ankle, I would get up really early and sometimes watch a little of her show. It was really lame.

5. Sure...(SPOILER ALERT!)
but Dave Garroway still brought the news during a very bad time in america - Cold War, bay of Pigs, etc. In this film, they utterly abrogate the right of the newsman to bring any news. He has to kidnap the producer and sneak off to bring a big story...
