The phone kept ringing yesterday at the office of Representative John D. Dingell, Democrat of Michigan, who was asked to strip to his underwear on Saturday before boarding an airplane because his artificial hip kept setting off security alarms.

The doctor who installed the hip 20 years ago after a hunting accident in Idaho called to offer Mr. Dingell, 75, a card saying he has the prosthesis, which would ease passage through metal detectors.

Constituents called to say that the incident, first reported in The Detroit News, was the best thing they had heard since Sept. 11 about airport security.
