1. I care. The ERA should have been ratified.
Failing that, a legislative remedy should have been passed. Perhaps we're too concerned with other things to notice what's going on in Congress.

I'm sick of this fucking old, white male dominated patriarchal oligarchy. I'm sick of the shit some humans have to put up with because they have a uterus, darker skin, preference for consenting adults of the same sex, or a smaller bank account.

78. I hope that everyone writes
3 nasty letters to: Snowe, Collins (both of ME) and that asshole Voinoivich from OH who is leaving the Senate. If just 2 of these fucking turds had voted for it, it would have passed.

And please note that 2 of them are WOMEN.

So no asking about salaries to find out if a woman is getting less...no Free Speech for the workers....only the Corporations have Free Speech.

I want Snowe and Collins to take an IMMEDIATE 23% CUT IN PAY so they can know just how it feels to make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes.

I wondered how long it would take before I saw something on DU about this.

Women's Rights are on at the bottom of the barrel....we're just supposed to take it.....suffer in silence.

FUCKING PISSES ME OFF! FUCKING SENATE! FUCKING COCKSUCKERS.

passes? Because the fact that we are living in a country where gender is a legal reason to pay someone less for equal work is not ok with me. If you agree with me, I'll start a legal push to get this reheard.

nothing to do with the TSA. Yet, there are multiple dozens of TSA posts. I think that subject has been adequately covered. Women's rights? That just sort of slips everyone's minds, I suppose. We're missing a lot right now in our zeal for the story of the week. It's a damned shame.

Yes, the TSA thing is an important story, but there are many, many equally or more important stories. This one affects the very livelihood of a majority of the citizens of the country. You'd think it would get some attention...

Edited on Mon Nov-22-10 05:41 PM by femrap
TWO FUCKING YEARS AGO.... and it took this long for the Senate to take it up. Now why the hell is that???? Why wasn't this brought to a vote when we had 60 fucking Dem Senators?

Anyone want to ask Harry this?

And Obama gives a 2 sentence 'boo-hoo'statement....'so sorry it didn't pass.'

Fuck Snowe, Collins and Voinovich..........And I'm sorry that I can't say Fuck Reid.

ETA: The House passed the bill 2 years ago. And all the other repugnant senators can go fuck themselves too...and fuck Cheney, too while we're at it.

44. The ERA did pass.
It wasn't ratified, lacking three states (five rescinded ratification after 1977 and eight states could only manage to pass it in one house). There is a difference, so let's not lose sight of that. It's not just the blowhards in Congress that have to be persuaded to add an amendment to the Constitution, it is the people as well.

The passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act can be dumped onto the Senate, though. Failing because it was held up by a minority. I don't think that Madison ever envisioned that the representative government the founders created would be corrupted by rules that have created 'loopholes' in the philosophical foundation of the process big enough for a battleship to pass through. We are at the mercy of the factions they tried to control and the tyranny of the minority is fully in evidence.

84. Well, Mr./Ms. Newbie Bossy
I worked many years as an Industrial Engineer and only after quitting a company could I find out how badly I was being underpaid.

You know about those rules where one is fired for discussing salaries, don't you? Worker bee has no Free Speech...only the Corporation has Free Speech.

Catch 22....there is a time limit on when a woman can file a pay discrimination case. But if she can't find out what the dudes are paid, how can she file????

http://www.newsweek.com/2010/09/22/why-women-need-the-paycheck-fairness-act.html

Read this. Your little snippet of a link is by a woman who knows where her bread is buttered. Another tool ready and willing to stand with the boyz so she can get her paycheck and keep her job.

What's with this 'ownership' attitude of yours....'my employees.' You sound so freepish.

You're new and from what you write, you're not welcome here.

You're just a part of the problem. Men who can't read or write make more money than a woman who knows a zillion software programs and has excellent communication and organizational skills.

BTW 49% of babies born today are to single mothers. There are lots of families out there w/ a mother as the one and only bread winner.

You just don't get it.

Don't bother to respond...you need to educate yourself on this topic before we can converse. I don't have the time or patience to educate you. buh bye. I bet you love the DLC.

111. Okay, on the other thread I read the link that
posted the summary of the proposed bill. The whole thing was one very, very long paragraph, but I got through it.

Anyway, what is it that everyone wants so bad that's in this bill?

What I got was easier to file class action lawsuits, business owners can be sued civilly as individuals as well as business owners, business owners will have to compile a whole bunch of statistics and send them to the government, and the government will set up a department to advise and train business owners on how to comply with the new statistical reporting requirements.

Is this what everyone is so upset about?

What's the part of this bill that people want so badly?

127. Are we talking about the concept of equality or
are we talking about this individual bill?

We have a long thread and no one has made any attempt to say what is in the bill.

There's a similar thread and on that one someone linked to a summary of the bill. A bit legalistic, but at least it says what's in the thing. I read it, and I don't know why everyone is so upset. It would be nice if someone who is very upset would read the summary and tell me what part they really, really want to become law.

Certainly we have all learned by now not to support a law based on the name. Remember Bush's Payroll Protection Act? I guess we all need to support that since we all want payroll's protected.

So if you really, really wanted this law passed, tell me what is the part of the law that we need really badly?

Is it the federal grants from a federal government agency to school districts and colleges to teach girls and women negotiating skills? That's in there too.

131. If you are truly
interested in learning about the realities of women and their families I would go read:

http://www.nwlc.org/

and also google: NOW...National Organization for Women.

They turn the legalese language into everyday terms that everyone can understand. And they also show how the Right Wing's 'spin' is WRONG.

Women are not WORTHLESS. Get it?

132. Okay I went to the website and saw
two press releases on the bill.

One said how disappointed the NOW is that the bill failed, and the other said the woman was in the senate when they voted to not pass the bill and that makes her want to not give up the fight.

This is one of the weirdest conversations I've ever been in at DU.

There are many people very upset a bill didn't pass, and I don't think 1 % of them have a clue what's in the bill.

I think it mostly comes down to a symbolic message where people think if the congress doesn't pass this bill, I guess because of its name, then obviously women aren't valued by society.

Pretty weird, but I think that's what's going on here because having read the summary of the bill posted on DU, I just don't see anything about it as very important. Some parts of it I see as real problems to small businesses especially. Do we really need it to be easier to have more class action law suits? Do public school teachers really need the federal government to tell them to teach negotiating skills to their students, and only to their female students? With a debt of $ 13 trillion, is this a good use of our scarce resources? Do small business owners really need to compile statistics on their payrolls by sex and send them into the government, and do those same small businessmen and women have time to meet with government workers to teach them how to comply with these new regulations?

I'm no expert on this bill for sure, but I just don't see the vital nature of it that is making everyone so upset.

I'm sure the answer will be something like "that's because you have no idea how hard women have it," which again would have nothing at all to do with the bill that everyone is lamenting.

Very weird.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :nuke: :argh:

In all seriousness, I did read your posts, and noticed you were the only one who offered any specifics on the bill. I think most people just know the name of the bill and think it is going to require employers to pay men and women the same for the same position. But as you pointed out, it is more about changes in the way one can sue a company, and how the company can respond.

I am willing to bet if the bill were titled A New Dawn on Lawsuit Formalities for Unequal Pay in the Workplace, people here would be shouting that we should be passing a law that requires equal pay.

First of all that came across as extremely rude. Second, in answer to your seemingly snide question, I warn every woman I know not to ignore issues of women's rights and feminism because we do not have a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing our freedoms and without one our lives can change drastically at the whim of the legislature.

Murray: Women Deserve Equal Pay for Equal Work

November 17, 2010
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement following the Senate vote on S. 3772, the Paycheck Fairness Act. The bill needed 60 votes to proceed and failed on a 58-41 vote. Murray is a co-sponsor of the bill and voted for it to proceed.

“I am extremely disappointed that Senate Republicans blocked this common-sense legislation to close the pay gap and help women and families in Washington state and across the country.

“This issue shouldn’t be controversial, and it shouldn’t be political: it should be about right and wrong. And it’s simply wrong that women only earn 77 cents for every dollar paid to men, and that so many women doing the same job as men are earning significantly less.

“Despite years of progress, our country has still not yet completely eliminated discrimination and unfairness in the workplace. There have been improvements, but we are still not yet at the point where our daughters can expect to be paid as equitably and fairly as our sons. This wage gap extends far beyond a paycheck—it affects a family’s income and their ability to build a secure retirement. And that has got to change.

“That’s why I was so proud to co-sponsor the Paycheck Fairness Act, which gives America’s working women additional support to fight for equal pay. It takes critical steps to empower women to negotiate for equal pay, closes loopholes that courts have created in the law, creates strong incentives for employers to obey the laws that are in place, and strengthens federal outreach and enforcement efforts.

“The Paycheck Fairness Act is an important and essential step in the long march to end discrimination in America, and I am going to keep fighting for its passage.”

Though it's not clear to me that legislation is capable of addressing the problem. (For that matter, it's not clear to me that women under 30, who earn more than their male counterparts, won't continue to earn more than them in the future.)

137. Have you looked at a summary of the bill?
A DU'er on the other similar thread linked to one.

I was surprised when I looked at the summary to see there isn't anything in the bill that I would call important.

Instead it's stuff like giveing federal grants to local school districts so public school teachers can teach units to their female students only on how to improve their negotiating skills. Does this sound like a good use of our scarce resources today?

There's a part detailing new statistics on payroll that businesses would need to keep and submit periodically to Washington. Then there's another part creating a new federal agency which would compile this data, and also go around to businessowners and teach them how to be in compliance with this new data gathering mandate. The summary posted doesn't say anything about business size. If there isn't a waiver for small business owners, this type of mandate would be just another burden on a restaurant owner or other small business.

There's lots more to the bill, but looking at it, I can certainly see why it didn't pass.

69. I certainly do. As I've said before; I worked for a corporation that had one pay scale for men
and a separate pay scale for women. The position I worked in started at $45.00 and hour for men and $25.00 an hour for women; for the EXACT same job! I demanded a better rate because of my experience and skill level (they were giving me all of the most critical and profitable jobs) and they bumped me to $35.00 an hour, which they insisted should make me happy. When a friend of mine was hired on at the $45.00 rate after I had worked there for two years I again demanded the same pay as a new hire, but was only bumped up to $40.00 and hour, which the company insisted "is really good for a woman." I was doing twice the amount of work my friend was and I was literally making millions for the corporation-but they wouldn't allow me to make a "man's pay" out of some sort of sick sexist principle. This shit has to end!!

About 7 1/2 million of those are already equal - Zero and Zero.

The question remains - how many people can you really employ to shovel money into investment banks?
