CBS Poll: Do New TSA Airport Screens Go Too Far?
Have we finally found an issue that just about everyone agrees on?

Stop complaining! The new measures are necessary to guarantee security.
8%
They may go too far, but are okay so long as people are given the option to opt out.

Enough with the scans and pat-downs! They're an invasion of civil liberties.

I'm not sure. Maybe I'll feel stronger after my next flight.

1. Wasn't it just last week CBS released a 'poll' saying how 80% loved the TSA?
seems they actually polled people this time.

13. There is no such word as 'irregardless'. What you mean is either
'regardless' or 'irrespective'.

Say NO to Palinese.

14. Well, actually, there is:

ir·re·gard·less
adv \ˌir-i-ˈgärd-ləs\
Definition of IRREGARDLESS
nonstandard
: regardless
Usage Discussion of IRREGARDLESS
Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.
Examples of IRREGARDLESS

1. I told them that irregardless of what you read in books, they's some members of the theatrical profession that occasionally visits the place where they sleep. —Ring Lardner, The Big Town, 1921

Origin of IRREGARDLESS
probably blend of irrespective and regardless
First Known Use: circa 1912

4. The first poll was poorly worded, but yes. It was conducted by CBS.
The first poll didn't explain that using "x-ray scanners" meant that TSA agents could see your naked body and record images of it. Had the poll explained that, the results would have been different.

6. Moreover...
The ONLY thing I've see outrage about (this last week, at least) was the "enhanced" pat downs. The poll which was cited by everyone, made no mention of the new procedure, rather, only asked about the new machines.

5. That's a web poll, but it's an improvement over some web poll I saw last week.
I think a CNN poll last week was near 50-50. I think we're winning the message campaign.

7. ANOTHER flawed poll... Am I the smartest person in the world or is everyone else an IDIOT?
>Enough with the scans and pat-downs! They're an invasion of civil liberties.

The issue isn't "scans and pat-downs". I had NO PROBLEM with the bag searches, metal detectors and wanding that was done prior to this new policy.

I WANT them to inspect baggage, use metal detectors, wanding, even that "puff" gizmo. I personally don't have a problem with the enhanced x-ray machines.

The problem I have (and I think the *real* issue is) the "enhanced pat downs" which, from what I gather, is something this side of a visit to a doctor's office.

9. OK, but then you should be put through metal detector/wanding + REGULAR pat down.
It's the "new, enhanced" pat downs.

But to agree with you, I personally think the whole non-metal thing is BS. It all comes from one underpants guy and that didn't work.

11. Hey, wait! You made me think of something...
In retrospect, before the "enhanced pat downs" were started, I remember the complains about the machines.

Could it be that the new pat downs are really a move to "make" us accept the new x-ray machines?

The fact is that the whole conversation has been taken away from the x-ray machines.

The 80% poll was about the new machines (not about the pat downs). So that would put you into the minority.

IN ANY CASE, there is NO WAY we could do WITHOUT any kind of scanning. The poll leaves that as a question and, IMO, is totally off base.
