Poll question: Who would you support in an NFL work stoppage?
There's a lot of news out there about the NFL not coming back next year because of labor issues. The owners want concessions from the union. The union wants their share of the pie.

Who would you support in an NFL work stoppage?

6. Speaking for myself, it depends on the trade/profession
I don't think I could support a union of foreclosure agents and private prison guards.

21. Forclosure agents and private prison gaurds are still important parts of the workforce
And if they decide to unionize for better benefits and work conditions, so be it.

9. NFL salaries are to labor issues as Marie Antoinette is to feminism.

Let me know if some actual working class people strike.

NFL players can take their "scholarship" funded communications degrees and get a real job.

Back office, parking, concessions, etc. will all be laid off. You're OK with that?

You're suggesting that I should be supportive of an NFL players strike because of all the low wage workers behind the scenes who will be put out of work?

Whose argument are you trying to make?

27. I'm suggesting that a work stoppage is bad for "working class people."
And I'm suggesting that the players have traditional labor concerns that should be important to people that support workers.

34. NFL labor concerns are a parody of traditional labor concerns.
A work stoppage is bad for working class people - none of whom are in that union. The union and the owners are the stampeding elephants who squash the little people indiscriminately.

The median salary for a Seattle Seahawk is $1m. The lowest salary is $310,000/year.

18. $10 million contract is not a labor issue
If they were striking for safety of the players or something like that, I would understand.

Professional sports are not a sport, everything is a business and games are even run that way. All these suckers who support teams like Cleveland thinking they will be in the Super Bowel someday are blind.

I will stick with College Sports and leave the pros to the owners and the lawyers.

Last ticket to a professional event was in 1995.

23. I don't care where they come from
I will not help the owners pay for it by buying tickets to their events or purchasing the licensed merchandise.

$10 million dollars for the boys to party on then drive down the street kill someone, then special treatment because they are a super star.

I don't care and don't want to be a part of the circus called professional sports.

When there are some real working class people having a labor dispute, call me.

32. The owners want more work for not as much money
And they want rookies to make less money. The players want better health benefits and an extra bye week (aka vacation). There is a dispute.

17. Stopped supporting professional sports with Baseball 1995 strike
1995 or thereabouts

I just think that the money they get paid and the price I have to pay is ridiculous. I have not purchased one professional sporting event ticket since that time.

College is much more of a sport than the pros.

and are due the same rights as any labor group that has the bravery to unionize.

14. Drew Brees is a member of the NFLPA executive board
he makes somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 million a year. Sorry, if I can't get all worked up in support for someone like him. I support neither side in this fight. I just want football.

24. The NFL is essentially proposing more work for not much more money
And if you're a rookie, for less money. The players also want improved long term health care. Those are traditional labor issues.

15. I Would Blame Them Both For Taking Away The Sport I Love
However, it would all come down to which side is being more reasonable. As of right now, they're BOTH being fairly unreasonable. I'm all for a Salary Cap and a rookie salary structure and all that stuff. I'm also all for allowing players the freedom to work wherever they can. However, I think the owners are being kind of unreasonable to be claiming poverty, yet refusing to open up their books and prove it.

In the end, I think everyone involved remembers how much damage Major League Baseball caused itself when it went on strike back in 1994, and they won't allow that to happen. Both sides will posture and make "scary" predictions of a year without football, but in the end, a deal will be struck at the eleventh hour and the season will commence without any missed games. It's going to be exactly the same as a contract negotiation between a team and a diva-like draft pick. They'll both posture and threaten a holdout, but they'll end up signing the contract just before any meaningful action is missed.
