Al Qaeda Promises U.S. Death By A 'Thousand Cuts'
Printer bombs planted on two cargo flights last month cost only a few thousand dollars and were intended to affect the American economy, according to a newly published Al Qaeda-affiliated magazine.

The attempt was called "Operation Hemorrhage," boasted the magazine, and the entire plot cost al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, only $4,200.

Yesterday, a special edition of Inspire magazine -- an English-language propaganda publication produced by AQAP -- gave a detailed description of how the attempted attack was conceived and produced.

"Two Nokia mobiles, $150 each, two HP printers, $300 each, plus shipping, transportation and other miscellaneous expenses add up to a total bill of $4,200," one article said. "That is all that Operation Hemorrhage cost us. In terms of time, it took us three months to plan and execute the operation from beginning to end."

The magazine also revealed the attack was not meant to kill more than the plane's pilot and co-pilot, and was meant to force the U.S. government to spend billions of dollars on preventive security screening measures.

2. Al Qaeda has their own magazine?
Who knew?

Would being a subscriber make one a supporter of terrorism? How about printing and mailing it?

Seems rather fishy to me.

3. Al Queda is very much like the Teabaggers
Both are creations of powerful interests that use both to secure power and accumulate more oceans of money.

7. The U.S. is already spending billions on security.
If we would stop the wars for oil in the middle east and stopped giving unconditional aid to Israel, it would lessen the terrorist threat. Killing people makes enemies. Yeah I know it sounds simplistic but it would work. Then you negotiate.

10. no it wouldnt
if you want to blame us completely for the past, fine, but the reality is that now, even if we pulled out completely and stopped funding Israel, we are still a bunch of infidels to these guys.

Spain has done next to nothing in the middle east, not a lot of troops, if any, no responsibility for how things are set up there now, no meddling, and the terrorists still attack them.
I'm all for reducing our footprint and cleaning up our behavior but the reality is that the terrorist threat comes from a very small group of folks who will always hate anyone who doesn't follow their narrow, uber-conservative religious viewpoint.

We are all whores and degenerates from their pov, and we are still the biggest guy on the block. We'd be a target regardless.

13. +1000
the threat is real... even if people like to think otherwise.

We need to reduce the footprint for a simple reason... we can't afford it. But we also need to be a lot more agile in doing security. Reating to threats is not a good way to do business.

8. That's the whole lunacy of this. They can spend $4,200 to cost us
billions. This is asymmetrical warfare at it's most basic.

16. Reminds me of Dr. Evil's "a million dollars."
A thousand cuts? Why, they won't even get our attention without at least a million cuts. ;-)
