My parents over the years have told a story of how the Watergate hearings brought them closer together.
My dad, until that tumultuous time in the early 1970s, used to have lunch in the teacher’s cafeteria in the high school where he worked. But the Watergate hearings brought him home, where he and my mom dined on tomato soup and grilled cheese and trashed Richard Nixon as they watched the Senate Watergate Committee investigate the break-in and wiretap at the Watergate hotel.

The televised hearings, my parents have said repeatedly, helped to define their generation, for better or worse. A televised hearing in early December just may help to define our times.
