Al Qaeda vows more 'thousand cuts' attacks05:55 AM Nov 22, 2010
WASHINGTON - Al Qaeda's Yemen-based wing has threatened more small-scale attacks against the United States to inflict broad economic damage - a new strategy which it likens to bleeding its enemy to death by "a thousand cuts".
In a new edition of its online English magazine, the group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula boasted that its recent attempt to bomb two US-bound cargo planes was cheap, costing only US$4,200 ($5,442) to carry out.
The bombs were intercepted last month in Britain and Dubai, sparking a worldwide security alert.
"To bring down America we do not need to strike big," it said. "In such an environment of security phobia that is sweeping America, it is more feasible to stage smaller attacks that involve less players and less time to launch."
