Who’s Hiring? Big Companies and U.S. Government

Tuesday, November 23, 2010 The best bets to find employment in the public and private sectors are with large corporations and the federal government, according to a new Gallup poll.

Forty-two percent of companies surveyed with at least 1,000 employees said they were hiring new workers, while 22% were laying people off. On the other hand, less than 10% of small businesses (10 employees or fewer) were seeking help, and 16% were letting people go.

Those seeking government jobs should look to federal agencies. Gallup found that 42% of them were adding employees, whereas state and local offices reported a net loss of workers. Job loss was particularly dramatic at the state government level, with 13% hiring and 34% laying off.

1. I see little evidence that major corporations are hiring-to-firing at a 2-1 rate.
If anything, the rate of offshoring has increased in the last year. The era of downsizing and outsourcing continues because the federal government refuses to do anything constructive to reform trade and regulate Multinationals, and we still have no industrial policy in the United States.

2. That isn't the number of positions
It is is the number of companies. By their methodology, I'm not sure if the companies hiring aren't having any lay offs and the companies laying off aren't hiring any workers or if they mean net positions. A lot of large companies do both simultaneously. They hire people in some locations or work groups while laying off in other areas or work groups. If you go to most corporate websites, you will see some openings, but maybe more people are leaving than there are openings.
