The New York Times Wakes Up to Palin

Sunday was the day the New York Times woke up to the reality that Sarah Palin could become President.

Frank Rich devoted his entire column to that possibility, and the Sunday Times Magazine gave its cover over to Palin and her coterie.

I can’t tell if this is panic on the part of the Times, or an effort to warn people about what might be coming, or a signal to the Republican establishment to get out their long knives and go after her.

But the prospect of Palin in 2012 is not one to be sneered at—much less hoped for, and I know a lot of Democrats are doing both.

And if she wins the nomination, and the economy remains in the tank, there is—yes, there is—a betting chance she could be the next President of the United States.

Don’t laugh.

Do you? Seriously? How much you wanna bet??

Sure, people throw it around as a possibility, etc but her chances of realistically becoming president are about 1 in 1,000.

And if the primaries manage not to be incredibly nasty and the economy is still in poor condition in 2012, I think she stands a decent shot. Give me 3:1 odds and I'd take that bet.

giving you 10:1 odds since the outcome they believe is so certain.

The first list of lines is for the list of hopefuls vying for the Republican Nomination. A few names are noticeably absent from the list – Pence, Thune, Barbour, just to name a few. The addition of General Petraeus was particularly interesting though.

That “other” category has to be a bit disparaging for the Bloomberg’s, Bayh’s, and Crist’s of the world. Maybe they should have had some backbone and stayed the course rather than taking the wishy washy road to irrelevancy after all.

2. Aren't the Republicans just keeping her visible in case Hillary runs?

They don't have a woman with any real notoriety, certainly nothing close to Hillary's name recognition.

4. I've become pretty defeatist about the US

I see two outcomes, a long slow glide into feudalism, or a sharp cathartic collapse to the lower tier of industrialized society (think Spain or Bulgaria).

The current status quo, weak democrats followed by republican destruction, followed by weak democrats, is a recipe for the former.

5. My nightmare scenario --

I think, given the Primary schedule, she could win the GOP nomination. Then my fear is that the press embraces her, as they did with George W. Bush (remember we couldn't imagine him as President?), and gives her a pass on everything. It could be 2000 all over again, with the "liberal media" cool kids presenting an Alaskan Mama Grizzly vs. a Democratic "smarty pants" (i.e, person with a working brain, education and intellect). And she wins.

I really don't want to think that this could possibly happen, but I don't know.

11. Its funny how quickly people seem to forget the 2000 election of Bush.

McCain was expected to win the republican nomination but fell quite short. It was a running joke to even ponder the thought of Bush becoming the 43rd President.


On January 20th 2001, Bush was sworn in as this nation's 43rd President.


Folks should stop saying that its IMPOSSIBLE for Palin to be elected. Nothing is impossible within the right political climate especially with extreme RW followers who might resort to just about anything to get her elected.

6. It was pointed out on CNN last night that....

They did not think it possible for her to win the election by just talking to Fox "News" and ignoring the rest of the news organizations. However, they did state doing just that could easily win her the Republican nomination.

8. I think she will run; her ego demands it.

But, I can't see her getting the GOP nomination. Intelligent Republicans want nothing to do with her. Karl can take care of it, if it begins to look like she could actually win. She will then run as a 3rd party candidate, splitting the Republican vote.

The above scenario depends on what the GOP wants. Four years of who knows what with Sarah? They won't be able to control her if she is actually elected, or four more years of Obama?

I figure they will go with Obama; who has shown his willingness to negotiate, over Sarah; the loose cannon.

10. More likely, it's the Republican PTB that are doing a preemptive strike onTeam Palin.

No way Palin can win the GE, IMHO. But she can certainly win the Republican nomination. They even have the Bush matriarch doing her best to get Jeb positioned for 2012 by slamming Sarah. With any luck, the rubes who vote Republican will see this as an unwarranted attack on their Snow Princess and will marshall their forces to get Sarah the nomination....or, even better, convince her to run as an independent.

13. She is peaking right now

with even MORE media attention. via Fox, the book and the TLC show.

It seems others have "done the math" and seen that she actually could prance away with the nomination if her loony base holds intact and votes in large enough numbers for her to lead in a splintered pack of contenders.

Then, if Rich's doomsday scenario plays out with Bloomberg and his billions playing the spoiler Independent card in 2012 - she perks right into 1600.

However, I think her TV show's gonna do her in. "Going clubbin' with Bristol' is just the beginning of the comedy mother lode this show provides. So this "peak" may be short lived.

15. And we don't know who will be the Democratic candidate in 2012. It might be Joseph Biden.
