UP: Panchayat bans mobiles for unmarried girls

Muzaffarnagar, Nov 23: Citing increased incident of love marriage and elopes, a village panchayat in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh has banned the use of mobile phones by unmarried girls.

The all caste and community panchayat of Lank village declared the ban of mobile phones for unmarried women on Monday, Nov 22. Panchayat stated the 'bad effects' of mobile phones as the reason behind the ban.

"The panchayat has imposed a ban on the usage of mobile phones by unmarried girls to prevent them from eloping with young boys against the wishes of their parents," panchayat spokesman Rajender Malick said.

4. The notion of marrying for love is relatively new
Sometimes dating makes me think arranged marriages are a good idea.

But, yeah, this is a horrible law.

It depended on many factors, such as the relative numbers of boys vs. girls, the work available to poor people, and the average fertility rate.

For large parts of European history, girls were the opposite of "valuable" in an economic sense, which is why the family had to come up with a dowry for the marriage to happen, ie, they had to pay the groom's family to take this extra mouth to feed off their hands.
