Nothing worked...everything that was supposed to be there was there....could not find any registry problems..but hell windows 7 registry is like looking for a needle in a haystack..

I spent 3 full 12 hour days to find this operating system..they should include 'virus' in their web crawler cause...without it..i would not be here

I could not open any .exe .scr .com nothing that would call up a program...but I think it was a software failure rather than a virus..I got 2 live boot virus removers and found and removed a couple...maybe they were more pervasive than I imagined...????? but still think it was a failure of the software...

I could load .exe files from system32...and found a ieplorer file in program files...not program <86> and it worked??

Could not even load .exe files from the command prompt...I am awaiting a restore CD from ASUS...and hope that fixes the windows 7 problem...but if not.I have Ubuntu!

1. Stay with the Ubuntu.
Forget about spyware and viruses. Make your time your time, instead of debugging M$ products for free.

21. Dual boot is a great way to go
but once I discovered that PokerStars (and other Windows programs I needed) ran just fine under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_%28software%29">WINE, I flushed Windows completely from my system on general principles.

A person may have once needed arcane computer skills to run Linux but not since Ubuntu was released. If one can operate the point-and-click Windows (or Mac) interface, they can run Ubuntu. Mint is even more user-friendly (essentially comes with the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu-restricted-extras">extra goodies out-of-the-box) but then again, it's based on Ubuntu.

5. I switched to Ubuntu, am delighted.
Nothing to screw around with, it cleans itself up after any updates, not a memory hog, fires up and ready to go in 30 seconds
( I times it) shuts down in 4 seconds.

I cleaned out the Windows Machine except for a couple of programs I like, Money and some games, otherwise use Linux.

If I can do it, anyone can, I am not a computer genius, but this machine is pretty intuitive. Learning curve is fast.
All I need is Adblock, Linux is built to be pretty virus proof.

6. I am NOT a programer...I need a simple program and this worked for me!
I know this stuff is for programmers and not for the uninitiated, but I had no choice..my job depended on it...and whatever infected...or stopped my processor from working cost me money!

really not needed. In the really early Linux days, well, that was pretty much true, and a lot of time. But you well might have applications that function best under windows for your needs ...

It saved my ass from either virus or a software failure..my livelihood is on the Internet..and when something interrupts that...life is not worth living...

In fact..I watched several live disk malware removal disks do there thing..and decided..if the only thing my computer did was show grass growing..I would watch grass grow!...I am SICK!

Be patient with yourself while you learn, but if your livelihood is on the internet, you'll at least want to keep that Live CD handy.

I have always found the forums to be really excellent...second best community on the internet (after DU).

If you need any help, though, feel free to ask.

This is what the freedom of open source feels like!

8. I always advise my windows friends to reinstall
it's too much of a pain to track down what went wrong, and if it's a virus/hacker, thats the only way to be 100% sure you got it all.

sorry to hear abut your trouble, but glad you were able to get back online :toast:

12. If you're going for Ubuntu I personally recommend Kubuntu with the KDE desktop
the general differentiation is usually that GNOME (Ubuntu's default desktop) is more "Mac-like", and KDE is more "Windows-like", but at this point GNOME is getting a bit long in the tooth and KDE is ahead in features and development (and KDE includes options by default for desktop effects and other things that GNOME requires addons for).

13. Ubuntu has really surprised me...
Edited on Tue Nov-23-10 10:12 PM by TroglodyteScholar
When my girlfriend's Vista machine took a dump, I used the Ubuntu Lucid live CD to mount her hard drive (Vista wouldn't) and recover almost all her data (months and months of important school work, photos, etc). Then I did a full install of Lucid, put all her personal files in place, and turned her loose. She's a smart lady, but no computer whiz...and she absolutely loves it. Been running it for maybe 9 months now without crashes of any sort. She even runs an XP Virtualbox with MS Office so she can verify that her documents from OpenOffice are displaying properly (sometimes they don't, especially PowerPoint).

And since I've had such success with Ubuntu, I've been encouraged to try a variety of modern Linux flavors. A lot of them are quite nice. I'm currently playing with PCLinuxOS, which (despite the boring name) is awesome. It offers an Enlightenment e17 flavor which is slick and fast, but several other (more stable) DEs are also available. Linux Mint also seems to have pretty broad appeal. Check out DistroWatch.

I'll use Windows as long as it's pre-installed on a computer I've bought, but running a machine with only Linux is no longer the scary prospect it used to be.

20. You're Welcome!
It sure took me long enough to convince you, and now look...you are a Mint Fanboy!

Good on you, Ubuntu is a fine choice as a Windows alternative. It has great support and documentation.

Here's my desktop. I'm running Debian Sid.

XFCE DE with the Compiz WM.
Tint2 up top, Cairo Dock, and conky to monitor it all.
