I don't have a star, so I can't post a poll, but....I would like everyone
Edited on Tue Nov-23-10 10:44 PM by Joe Fields
to just tell me in this post whether they fly or not. Or whether they fly rarely, or a lot.

I haven't flown since 1995, and that was one time since 1985. I may have flown a half dozen times in my life, and I am 54.

This is just to get a read to the percentage of people here who do fly and how often. I would like those who don't fly to post, as well.

Thank you.

In 2000 and 2001. One just a few weeks after 9/11.

6. I didn't fly at all between 1980 and 2000,
never once left Alaska, but in the past seven or eight years, I've been flying about three or four times a year. If we want to get anywhere from here, we HAVE to fly unless we have weeks at our disposal. That drive down the Al-Can is l-o-n-g.

13. I would sooooo love to drive the Al-Can someday.
I've heard that I need a few cans of gas and at least two spare tires. Is that true?

Also, having seen several travelogues on Alaska, I understand the need to fly from place to place within the state, even though they say that flying in those little props can be very treacherous there.

33. I've never done the whole Al-Can,
just the section between Tok, Alaska, and Haines, Alaska, which involves driving through a corner of the Yukon Territory. The scenery is breathtaking, mile after mile. That was over 35 years ago, so I can't really comment on the condition of the road at this time. Gas stations are few and far between, though, so carrying extra gas is definitely a good idea. Even driving around here in the state, we usually carry an extra 10 gallons or so just to be on the safe side.

7. Then you really don't know what it's like now. It's got to be hard for you to identify with the
concern over what's going on. I fly several times a year, and it's been getting more intense at screening as time goes by. It's now gone to far. Been scanned and blown and frisked many times. I hate it. The pressure of taking off your shoes, belt, emptying pockets, taking laptop out for separate check, separating liquids, trying to dress correctly (not bulky), with a line building up behind you, then getting picked out for special treatment and questioning, having to open your carry on and...well, you're treated like a criminal. And this is all before what has now been started with these scanners and groping.

9. Do it again
with pollage. I know the fund drive is over, but anyone with the username Joe Field's needs a star.

I used to fly a lot but now rarely, and as of a few months ago, I'm trying to avoid flying at all costs. I don't do well with keeping my smart ass comments quiet around TSA.

14. Have not flown since 2005
More economic than anything else. I recently moved to Kentucky for a few months to go work on a campaign and if I did not need my car, I would have flown (700 miles from home), but it would not make sense to fly then rent a car for 3 months so I drove.

Would I like to travel again without spending a whole day in the car? YEs. Will I be able to over the next few years-- not unless I win the lottery.

I used to fly more often, maybe average twice a year. Lately, I just don't have the funds for air travel.

19. In the 90's I flew often for work - sometimes weekly
In this decade anywhere from 1-5 flights per year at most. This year I haven't flown. We are going on holiday in Dec., and I just rented a minivan because it only takes a day and a half to drive to our destination.

20. I live in Indonesia and have to fly, the ferries are too slow and sometimes sink
I think flying is safer here than any other form of transport, actually.

I hope they don't go global with the new security screening everyone in the US is subjected to. If they do, I might look at saving up for my own boat.

22. Only times I've flown recently were on military orders, PCSing and deploying
Otherwise, I prefer to drive or take Amtrak. The scenery's much better that way, and I can make more frequent stops and enjoy the country a little more.

23. Not since 2000, before 9/11.
I've never liked flying, but sometimes that's the only way to get somewhere, Europe, Asia, etc. However, I have not wanted to go anywhere badly enough in recent years to deal with all you have to go through just to get on a plane, apart from the actual flying... :(

31. Anywhere from 2
to 4 round-trips/year. I live 2000 miles from most of my family so if I want to see them I have to fly. My spouse flies overseas on business once every year or two and I go on vacation. I've been flying more for business in the past year. So far this year I've flown 3 times and will be flying again in Dec: London, Paris, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh. I've been flying since I was 7 or 8 on and off - sometimes more often, sometimes less. I can remember when flying was pleasant. When you got real silver ware with your meal and there was enough leg room to get out of your seat without everyone else in the row having to get up. I loved flying so much I wanted to be a flight attendant (couldn't because I'm too short ... they had height and weight restrictions then). Now I'm relieved I didn't become one. Flying has become a miserable chore which I only do to get someplace I want to be.
