Vick talks to Conn. students about dogfighting
Source: AP/Yahoo

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)—Eagles quarterback Michael Vick(notes) urged high school students in Connecticut to show kindness toward animals on Tuesday, adding to the string of appearances he’s made since returning from a dogfighting conviction to become one of the NFL’s most exciting players.

“I didn’t really care what people felt about animals,” Vick said in comments reported by the New Haven Register. “I didn’t care about the welfare of animals.”

He noted that animals have no choice when they are put into a ring. If you could ask a dog if it wants to fight, “do you think he’ll say yeah?” Vick asked.

“Nowadays, every day my daughters ask me if we can get a dog. … I can’t get a dog for my kids,” said Vick, who is barred from owning animals.

1. Good he should have to explain to his daughter why she can't have a dog
He should be forced to completely finance an animal shelter, as well as a campaign against animal cruelty.

2. And then he should be kicked out of the NFL. And after that he should have his dick cut off and ...
fed to a pit bull. Then he should have his children taken from him. Next, he should lose his right to vote. Finally, he needs to be placed in the stocks at Williamsburg. I know that won't please everyone here at DU (AKA redemption ain't us), but perhaps it's a start.

3. What are you, crazy?
He shouldn't have his dick cut off and fed to a pit bull, he should have to feed it to the pit bull himself! What's wrong with you? You turning into a softie or something? :)

5. Only in Goodell's NFL was he allowed back in the league
Pete Rossell's first rule was - NO GAMBLING

Hornung and Alex Karras each had to sit out a season due to their "association" with gamblers. Namath had to sell his share in a restaurant for the same reason.

7. Are there some DU'ers who are trying to use THIS SITE to REHAB Michael Vick's Reputation?
If so...they must be delusional thinking that that Evil Man's Time in Jail will serve for Recompense for his HIDEOUS CRUEL TO ANIMALS! It's like trying to REHAB a MURDERER or RAPIST for those of us who love our animals and are devastated that this HIGH ROLLER would be using his DOGS FOR SPORT...Just BECAUSE HE COULD...BECAUSE HE WAS MIGHTY AND POWERFUL and MADE SO MUCH MONEY!

GET OFF OF TRYING TO REHAB THAT SCUM'S REP...! HE doesn't feel REMORSE OR CARE about WHAT HE DID TO THOS DOGS! IT's All About HIM!

He's not REPENTED...he just is waiting to go back to his FULL GLORY as a GLADIATOR for FOOTBALL FANS!

:puke:

9. My issue with Vick has never really been about the dogs. . .
but that when he did this stuff, he was essentially running an illicit GAMBLING OPERATION. And that's an absolute no-no with the NFL.

Aside from the obvious moral issues regarding cruelty to animals, Vick was making himself vulnerable to blackmail due to the gambling nature of dogfighting. And the NFL can't have players and coaches doing that and risk compromising the integrity of the game of football.

Given the circumstances and the fact that throughout its history, the NFL has suspended/banned players for gambling (of any and all sorts), Vick's punishment was appropriate.

12. I agree
see my post upthread

Pete Rossell knew that he couldn't compete with college football if there was ANY question of gambling.

I have to say that I was amazed that Vick was allowed back into the league for that reason alone. But then look at who Goodell is (corporate-Bushie type) and it makes sense. People are chattle to him... like dogs were to Vick.

15. I am a Giant fan and I didn't watch the game because he was in it.
I will never watch a game where he plays in it. Even if it's a Super Bowl.

He is a monster who will never earn my respect no matter how many fake repentant meetings his publicist makes up for him.

20. Doesn't anyone here believe that people can have second chances? Sheesh!
Edited on Tue Nov-23-10 10:22 PM by alp227
Hmm, I wonder why in a left-wing forum no one's calling for George "War Criminal" Bush's head yet here. Vick's served his time already. As for football, I root for the Oakland Raiders first and foremost.

And I didn't know much about Vick's gambling, a charge that (I read on Wikipedia) NFL Commissioner Gooddell used to suspend Vick.

(on edit) Just found this New York Times story about the Vick speech. Believe it or not, the Humane Society actually sponsored Vick's talks. So do you have a problem with the Humane Society now?

Interesting how even PETA thought the dogs should've been put down, and changed their mind after watching Vick's dogs get rehabbed successfully.
