Kamala Harris wins attorney general's race as Steve Cooley concedes
Edited on Wed Nov-24-10 04:10 PM by cal04
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/11/steve-cooley-kamala-harris-attorney-general.html

More than three weeks after he declared victory in the race for state attorney general, Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley conceded defeat Wednesday as he trailed by more than 50,000 votes in one of the closest statewide races in California history.

The decision means that San Francisco Dist. Atty. Kamala Harris will assume the post of California's top law enforcement official, giving Democrats a clean sweep of the statewide offices.

Uncertainty had swirled around the election result since shortly after the votes began to be counted on Nov. 2. Cooley claimed victory on election night, only to discover the next morning that he was behind. As county registrars scrambled to count more than 2 million ballots left uncounted after election day, the lead bounced back and forth, but Harris has held an advantage for more than a week.

(snip)
“Frankly the margin is just too great to be made up with the votes that remain to be counted,” Spillane said.

1. I'm glad that Cooley is being classy about this...
He could have done otherwise.

And big congratulations to Kamala Harris!

A clean sweep in California...Wonderful!

I'm feeling more hopeful than I have in a long time about our prospects out here.

Recommended.

7. He wasn't "classy." Please read his statement.
He insinuated that the only reason he wasn't elected is because he had an "R" next to his name.

11. That's too bad.
What I meant was he didn't carry on about fairness, and demand a recount and that sort of thing.

He might be right about that "R" though... :P

Most Californians don't like Republicans...

14. I have no doubt that if the margin were closer, he'd have been terrible.
When the votes are counted, he will lose by at least 0.6%, which sounds small but is really huge, of course. He cannot afford a recount and has absolutely no leg to stand on so, through gritted teeth, "conceded" by scolding the voters of California. This, after hinting about "potential" voter fraud or unspecified "irregularities" since he fell behind some days ago.

I'm so pleased that this man, a puppet of the extreme right, will not become attorney general. Interestingly, I believe that his promise to defend Proposition 8 probably did him in. It won him no votes that would have otherwise gone to Harris, and lost him a good number of votes from those who feels strongly against the proposition.

4. Let me repeat it one last time.......
CALIFORNIA is Democratic

Governor – Democrat

Lt. Governor – Democrat

Secretary of State – Democrat

Attorney General – Democrat

Controller – Democrat

Treasury – Democrat

Insurance Comm. - Democrat

US Senate – Both Democratic Senators

US Congress – Democratic majority

CA State Senate – Democratic majority

CA State Assembly – Democratic majority

CA Big City Mayors – Democratic majority

AND two more big republican losses in California - Prop 23 & Prop 25 -

Beautiful California the most populous state with the largest economy with wondrous National & State parks & wilderness areas, miles & miles of protected coastline....(And the CA clean water & air bill stays INTACT, though the tea-party backers the republican Koch Bros. & big oil corporations spent millions of dollars to pretty much get rid of CA clean water & air bill though Prop 23) The republican attempt FAILED!

The DEMS also won CA Prop 25 - Budget legislation will now pass with a simple majority, (instead of the republicans stronghold on the state which forced a 2/3 majority in the State Senate & Assembly that was needed to pass any monetary legislation). The republican attempt FAILED!!

And CHEERS to the San Francisco Giants - World Champions!

9. Democrats gained a seat in the assembly too.
The anti-gay Republican running for the open GOP-held seat was defeated - he was a lawyer for the Proposition 8 campaign. My boyfriend's vote helped defeat him!

12. Arizona is the complete opposite.
I wonder if the R's screw us up even more, and they are determined to do so, people will change their reflexive R votes next time around. Of course, the Democratic party would have to field more quality candidates. Pardon my cynicism, but I don't think it will happen.

I am very happy for California to be free of the shackles of R rule. I hope the Dems govern wisely.

15. Voter registration is key in Arizona.
If the Latino and allied citizenry can be properly mobilized, things will look very different there soon enough.

5. More good news.....
I miss living in N. CA. Ohio went from all blue to all red. And the new Gov. is an evil sadist. People will be dying the streets.

I'm happy for CA!

S.J. votes widen McNerney lead
Thousands of ballots remain uncounted in Contra Costa

STOCKTON - Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, took a decisive lead over his Republican challenger, David Harmer, after San Joaquin County released its final vote count Tuesday afternoon.

McNerney's lead grew to 2,475 votes, according the most recent results released by the four elections offices in counties that contain parts of California's 11th Congressional District. With Tuesday's update, the focus turns to the other end of the district, in Contra Costa County, where provisional ballots are still being processed.

There were about 18,000 uncounted ballots in Contra Costa County on Tuesday afternoon, but it was unclear how many were in the 11th District. Two weeks ago, Contra Costa County Clerk Steve Weir estimated there were about 3,000 votes left in the 11th District to count.

McNerney has already declared victory, but Harmer has not conceded. "I think the voters in this district have made their choice clear, and (Harmer) should honor their wishes," McNerney campaign spokeswoman Sarah Hersh said after Tuesday's update. "This confirms what we already knew."
