An Ode To Turkey Stuffing

Once again, I will try to duplicate my mother's delicious turkey stuffing.

She would saute onions and celery in margarine...we couldn't afford real butter. She always had to shoo me and my spoon away, so there would be enough to add to the dried pieces of bread that had sat on the counter top for the last day or so.

I've got your recipe, Mom. Yep, I've added the sage, salt, pepper, chicken stock, just like you did.

But it's missing a couple major ingredients. It's missing You and Dad. And no matter how hard I try, it's just doesn't taste as good.

Your grandchildren will be here for dinner later. You would be proud as to how they turned out. We will raise a glass of wine in your memory, and I will tell them that the stuffing could have been better.

toasted the bread in the oven on cookie sheets

Any other kind is just not the same. I really detest doing it, but that's the best part of any Thanksgiving dinner, to me. And she also did the bread the same way as in the OP, put it out all over the counter and left it overnight. And I've been known to eat it cold, since it calls to me from the fridge, LOL. :D Happy Thanksgiving! :hi:
